About This Pub

Ah, the New Inn – what a gem it is, tucked away in Colchester. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got this really inviting feel with roaring fires and a cosy setup that just makes you want to settle in for the evening. The beer is where it truly shines; that cream stout sounds like an absolute winner, and with a solid selection of local options that change up regularly, it's a treat for any beer enthusiast. The staff really add to the charm – Chloe's pint-pulling skills are legendary, and Matt's welcoming nature makes you feel right at home. Plus, the food doesn't disappoint; those Sunday roasts and pies are spot-on for a satisfying meal without the fuss. It's affordable too, which is always a bonus when you're out for a few rounds. On the flip side, it's a bit hidden, so you might have to hunt it down at first, and being closed one day a week could throw a spanner in the works for impromptu meet-ups. All in all, though, it's got a stellar 4.5 rating from heaps of happy visitors, so if you're after a proper pub experience with great drinks and a friendly crowd, I'd say give it a go – you won't be disappointed!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on – think creamy stouts and a great range of local brews that are kept really well, with regulars changing things up to keep it fresh.
  • Staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly; the landlady Chloe knows her stuff when it comes to pulling a perfect pint, and the landlord Matt is always up for a chat.
  • Prices are really reasonable – you'll get your drinks without breaking the bank, and there's even talk of discounts for CAMRA card holders soon.
  • It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere with roaring fires that make it feel like a proper traditional pub, perfect for a relaxing evening.
  • The food is brilliant, especially the home-cooked Sunday roasts and pies – it's proper hearty grub that hits the spot.
  • There's a nice beer garden that's surprisingly quiet, even near a busy road, and the function room is ideal for events like parties.
  • Overall, it's a hidden gem with high marks from folks who've visited, making it a top choice for a good night out.
Cons
  • It's tucked away in a quiet spot, so you might miss it if you're not specifically looking, which could be a bit of a faff to find first time round.
  • It seems to be closed one day a week, which might disrupt plans if you're hoping for a spontaneous visit.

Lovely, cosy pub with roaring fires and friendly staff. Great home cooked food with an excellent Sunday roast and range of pies as well. Nice selection of local beers on offer. We go in as often as we can!

We hired the function room for our engagement party and we had the best time! As there was a lot of us (around 60 guests) they very kindly allowed us to have sole use of the function room (where we played our own music) but also have sole use to one side of the bar which worked amazingly for some of the guests that preferred to have a quieter seat inside near the fire. We also had our own outside area which was also made so much nicer by them having fire pits going for us! All of the staff were so attentive on the lead up to our celebration and on the night, we couldn’t be more grateful to them for helping us have such a special evening! I’m gutted that I didn’t get more photos of the function room as it looked so pretty with all of the fairy lights on, and we were able to decorate it as we wanted! Thank you so much Lisa and the team!

This pub is tucked away, so you really wouldn't know it was there unless you was looking for it. Nice selection of drinks available, plenty of seating and outside seating space as well (and a bit quieter than some of the other pubs near by as it's tucked away!) Service was good and it seemed like a really chilled out pub. The pub signage has a picture of a bomb on it - the reason of which is answered on the wall inside the pub... (we thought it was unusual signage!)

First time in this pub. The guy behind the bar was very welcoming and helpful. The beer was kept well and lovely. The bartender said they change beers regularly which is a good sign. Nice beer garden that's very quiet even though its near a main road. Would definitely come back and planning on doing so.
