About This Pub
Ah, Mort Subite, what a lovely spot it is down in Altrincham – I've got to say, it's one of those places that just sticks with you after a visit. From what I've gathered from folks' thoughts, the beer selection is truly something special; they've got this incredible lineup of Belgian and other international brews that make you feel like you've popped over to Europe for the night. The staff really shine too, always so welcoming and full of insights on what to try next, which makes the whole experience feel personal and enjoyable. Then there's the atmosphere – that warm, dark interior with some cracking music playing in the background creates just the right setting for a relaxed evening. And don't forget those complimentary snacks; they're a thoughtful addition that elevates things nicely. On the flip side, though, it's tucked away in a basement, so it can get a bit dim and enclosed, which might not be everyone's cup of tea if you prefer a lighter, airier space. Plus, with doors opening around tea time and not every day of the week, it might not be the go-to for a quick after-work stop. All in all, it's a brilliant choice if you're up for something unique and atmospheric, but worth keeping those quirks in mind for the full picture.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of Belgian and international brews that you won't find just anywhere – it's like a little treasure trove for beer enthusiasts.
-
The staff are incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, always ready with recommendations and making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a dark, cosy interior and great music that creates the perfect spot for chilling out and enjoying a drink.
-
They offer quality complimentary snacks, which add a nice touch to the overall experience and make it feel even more welcoming.
-
It's got that unique, relaxed vibe that's a breath of fresh air compared to your typical pub, making it ideal for unwinding in Altrincham.
Cons
-
Being in a basement means it's quite dark with no natural light, which might not suit everyone if you're after something brighter or more open.
-
It tends to open a bit late in the evening, around 5 PM, so if you're looking for an early pint, you might have to plan around that.
-
The operating hours can be a tad inconsistent, with it only open five days a week, which could be a downside for spontaneous visits.
-
Their website seems to be playing hard to get, as it's not accessible right now, making it trickier to check details online before heading over.

Great establishment. The service provided by staff is incredible - attentive. The selection is spot on. Music is a vibe, and so is the warm and dark interior.
Quality complimentary snacks.
Is the best place to chill and drink in Altrincham.
I absolutely love this place. Fantastic selection of Belgian beers in this incredibly relaxed, dark bar that makes it feel like you've stepped into a little pocket universe. The staff are always incredibly knowledgeable on their drinks and are super welcoming.
This is a brilliant, atmospheric little bar with a European beer selection unrivalled by anywhere else in Manchester I can think of!
There is something for everyone and very friendly service from the owner who has great knowledge of the beers on offer.
Great atmosphere, wonderful people and enjoyable music.
Beers from totally another level, import from mainly Belgium and Germany, but with a lot of local flavours. Must see!!
I absolutely love this place. So different from a real ale pub and a breath of fresh air - although there isn't much in there, it's on a basement, so has no windows. Has a fantastic range of Belgian beers as well as those from more unusual places - Norwegian beer anyone?! - had to be experienced by anyone who wants a change from the hippy IPA norm. It does have a few wines and cocktails, should you have any non-beer drinkers in your party.
