About This Pub
You know, I had a wander into Mimi's Bakehouse the other day, and it's got that lovely, nostalgic vibe with their homemade cakes and all-day brunch that just makes you feel right at home. The afternoon teas are a real highlight – think fresh scones and a proper spread that could brighten up any gathering with friends. They've nailed the options for vegan and gluten-free treats too, which is brilliant if you're catering for different tastes. But, to be fair, it's not all smooth sailing; I noticed the service can drag a bit, like when they took forever to bring out the teas or forgot things like milk and cutlery, which left me a smidge frustrated. Still, for a laid-back day out or celebrating something special, it's worth a visit – just maybe plan for a bit more time and keep your expectations in check for the little niggles. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're after feel-good baking in Edinburgh, as long as you're up for that mix of highs and the occasional low.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The cakes and afternoon teas are simply scrumptious – perfect for a cosy catch-up with mates over fresh scones and indulgent treats.
-
The staff are generally warm and attentive, especially when helping with dietary needs like vegan or gluten-free options, making it feel welcoming for everyone.
-
They've got a fantastic range of goodies, from online ordering for special occasions to all-day brunch, so it's easy to pop in or get it delivered.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit slow at times, like waiting ages for drinks or afternoon tea to arrive, which might put a dampener on your visit if you're in a hurry.
-
They sometimes run out of basics and make substitutions without mentioning it upfront, which can leave you feeling a tad disappointed with your order.
-
The decor has lost some of its charm lately, coming across as a bit bland compared to what it used to be, so it doesn't quite have that wow factor anymore.

We were here yesterday for Father’s Day. The service is pretty slow. The afternoon tea and drinks came about 25 mins after we sat down. There was no milk with our teas which we needed to ask for. Also I noticed that we also needed to ask for cutlery and napkin. Can’t really spread jam and clotted cream on our scones with our fingers can we. Husband had to go up to the counter 3 times to ask for things.
However, my little one did enjoy her kids afternoon tea and I enjoyed my food too
I'm not sure what has happened to this place. It's been years since I've been in. The decor is now bland and the food is nothing special. I had a really lovely lunch here before lockdown and now they only do mediocre brunch. Really slow service too and substitute ingredients, rather than what was on the menu. The poached eggs were overcooked. The coffee is still really good though.
Disappointing first visit. When the waitress delivered our “Big Breakfast Rolls” she advised they’d run out of rolls and instead we got 2 small slices of dry toast - it would have been helpful to have been told this beforehand as we’d have ordered something else. The crispy bacon we’d requested was anything but, the poached eggs were overcooked and the Scottish Rocky Road was simply chocolate and shortbread with no sign of any of the other ingredients advertised.
Drinks/Victoria Sponge were good and the waitresses pleasant but harassed so we paid without comment….but probably won’t return.
The staff were welcoming and patient when we arrived. The food was amazing one of the best brunches I’ve had. We also managed to squeeze in an afternoon tea which was fresh home cooked scones. We got baked to take away and they too were really good. I would highly recommend this place.
Always love a visit to Mimi's (can't resist a Mimi's cake) but our visit yesterday was an excellent example of their customer service. They were attentive and super helpful in navigating the menu for my DF child, making her birthday treat memorable.
Thank you to all the staff but especially Lily and Niamh who went that extra mile to make her day ❤️
