About This Pub

Ah, Midge Hall – it's one of those unassuming pubs that you stumble upon and end up loving for its straightforward charm. From what I've gathered, the food is a real highlight; folks rave about the generous portions and how everything tastes spot on, whether it's a lasagne or a burger, and the prices won't break the bank. The staff are dead friendly and attentive, making you feel right at ease, and it's brilliant for family lunches or just popping in with mates. That beer garden is a nice touch on a sunny day, and the building's location near a train signal box adds a bit of character – imagine sipping a pint while keeping an eye out for trains! On the downside, it can get a tad frustrating with waits for food, as they sometimes seem understaffed, and there are little niggles like overly salted chips or items vanishing from the menu. Plus, those power surges might give you a start now and then. Overall, with a strong 4.3 rating, it's got more going for it than not, so I'd say give it a go if you're in the area – just maybe plan for a bit of patience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Friendly and attentive staff who really make you feel at home, just like chatting with old mates.
  • The food is spot on – generous portions and tasty dishes at fair prices, perfect for a satisfying meal.
  • It's got a charming atmosphere with a nice beer garden and a location right by an old train signal box, which is a treat if you're into that sort of thing.
  • Great for family get-togethers or groups, as it's welcoming and handles larger parties well.
Cons
  • Sometimes there's a long wait for food because they seem a bit short-staffed, which can put a damper on things.
  • A few minor gripes like the chips being pre-salted, which might not suit everyone's taste, or certain menu items disappearing.
  • Occasional power surges that make the lights flicker, adding a quirky but not always pleasant touch to the vibe.

Was pleasantly surprised by this little pub restaurant. Booked for a family lunch of 6 adults and two children. Staff were attentive and friendly. Food was very good and of over generous proportions. I had the lasagne shown. Prices are fair.

Visited with my mother twice after years and both times it's been some of the best food we've ever had can't wait to come back again however only two minor complications, the chips are presalted and it's just a little too much for my liking, and I'm sad the phoenix burger is gone!! Ii got it once as a kid and it was insanely hot but wanted to try it when I was an adult and it doesn't exist :( However 5 stars all around and the one waitress who was doing everything by herself did amazing

Although the food was plentiful & tasty, we had to wait over an hour for it to arrive. Only one member of (very pleasant) staff on shift covering the bar & food orders, which is not fair! This is the second time in a couple weeks we have had to wait a long period of time. More staff needed or custom will be lost

After spending a good amount of money (9 people) plus drinks we all said how we enjoyed lunch and went out to sit in the beer garden - it was a beautiful afternoon so we lifted the benches from the " shed" into the sunshine for us and another couple with children (so both occupied) - the lady who I gave a tip to walked past us saying - that's ignorant- they better put them back when they leave (as we intended to ) because I'm not doing it - we all thought her SO rude especially as there was plenty of extra space and we weren't blocking anywhere - I don't know whether she heard us saying how rude she was but she came over and said excuse me could you put the table back when you leave (why she couldn't have just said this at 1st - so my daughters partner said of course and by the way we heard what you said !! Her reply - oh sorry I didn't realise was you guys !@@ huh would it have made a difference 🤔- put a dampener on a lovely family meal .

Pretty decent food and service. Nice building too, right by an old signal box at a level crossing. So if you're a fan of trains, this is a good choice for you. Didn't hear one pass whilst there, so not sure if or when/how often they run. The lights flicker with occasional power surges, apparently due to complex fittings running on dimmers. Sounds like bad electronics to me, possibly in the bulbs themselves. Starter and main with 2 drinks each for 6 came to £29 each, including tip, so good value.
