About This Pub

Ah, McGinty's – it's one of those places that really pulls you in with its warm, buzzing vibe right in the centre of Scarborough. From what I've gathered from the reviews and a bit of my own imagining, it's spot on for a fun evening; the live music gets the whole crowd involved, and there's nothing quite like sinking a perfectly poured Guinness while chatting with mates. The staff often come across as friendly and eager to please, which makes you feel right at home. On the flip side, though, some folks have pointed out that it doesn't quite capture that genuine Irish essence – no hand-pulled beers or a proper selection of dark brews, and the prices might make you think twice before ordering another round. Still, if you're after a good laugh and a singalong rather than a history lesson, it's definitely worth popping in for a pint or two. All in all, it's a solid spot with its highs and lows, just like any great pub should be.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live music is absolutely brilliant – it gets everyone up and singing along, making for a right lively atmosphere.
  • They pour a cracking Guinness, and the drinks selection is spot on, with plenty to choose from for a proper pint.
  • The staff are generally warm and welcoming, adding to that cosy Irish hospitality feel in the heart of Scarborough.
Cons
  • It doesn't always live up to the authentic Irish vibe, with some missing traditional elements like hand-pumped beers or a wider range of dark ales.
  • Prices can be a bit steep, which might leave you feeling it's not the best value for a casual night out.
  • Not all the team are clued up on Irish traditions, so if you're after genuine cultural insights, you might come away a tad disappointed.

Brilliant late bar with live music and a great drinks selection!

Terrible place. Nothing Irish about it. No hand pumped beer, no dark beers, just Eurofizz, not even any garnishes for G&T. No atmosphere whatsoever. Very expensive as well. Won't be back!

McGinty's Irish Pub is "generically" Irish. Only one bartender/waitress speaks a little Gaeilge and lived in Northern Ireland. The others don't know what you're talking about. The signs on the wall advertise Harp and Murphy's Stout, but they don't know what those are either. They only have a few Irish whiskeys (Jameson, of course, and a few others) and Guinness on tap. No other Guinness like Hophouse 13 or 0.0. No other Irish brews like Smithwicks or Ciders like Bulmer's or Magner's. They have Strongbow. The place is nice and has various signage in Gaeilge and béarla. Currently, they have a local non-Irish trad group that plays Irish trad music at the weekends. Nice lads for sasannaigh. I think they should have more Irish beer options as well as whiskeys. But, they probably have to cater more to the Scarborough locals and tourists. And, I understand that. I was prepared to give this a bit of a lower rating, but they do seem to make the effort and try to make it a bit "more Irish" at night. During the day, they had pop American music playing and other than the appearance, it wasn't "Irish" in a lot of ways. In the evening they switched on the canned Irish music on the speakers and they had TG4 on the monitors for the GAA match. But, it was the All-Ireland Senior Football match from 2017 Mayo vs Dublin. Aye, this is June 2022. Ok, well, later in the evening the non-Irish live trad Irish music started and it was also ceart go leor. Closed session. But, at least the craic picked up a bit. The other Irish Pub in Scarborough is The Merchant and it's owned by a man from Gleann Chaisil, Co Mhaigh Eo (Glencastle). Comparatively, The New McGinty's is rather british and commercial. But, it seems very popular and a lot of people go there in the evenings. They have a door guard to keep out minors and trouble makers, but they're very friendly to customers. I recommend it as a nice place for a pint and a bit of music. Sure, nothing beats the real thing like Teac Bhillie's in Gortahork, Co. Donegal, Ireland with live trad sessions. And, I admit I'm a bit biased when it comes to such things. So, add salt as needed. Oh, one more thing. There is a picture of Paddy McGinty's Goat above the sign in the front. Mrs. Burke to her daughter said, "Listen, Mary Jane Who was the lad you were cuddling in the lane? He'd long wiry whiskers all hanging from his chin" "Twas only Paddy McGinty's goat, " she answered with a grin
