About This Pub
Ah, Mariners Arms in North Shields – it's one of those classic pubs that feels like a hidden gem if you're in the mood for something straightforward and unpretentious. I have to say, the highlights really shine through; it's got that cosy, welcoming vibe where you can pop in for a quick beer without breaking the bank, and the staff are just brilliant, always up for a bit of friendly chat that makes you feel part of the crowd. From what I've gathered, it's perfect for a relaxed evening with good value drinks and a genuine local atmosphere that brings people together. On the flip side, though, it's not without its drawbacks – the place is on the small side, which can make it feel a tad squished on busier nights, and honestly, it does look like it hasn't had a freshen-up in years, with some areas not being the tidiest, especially the facilities. Still, if you're someone who appreciates the charm of an old-school boozer over flashy modern spots, it's worth a visit, but maybe keep your expectations in check for the extras. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back pint, as long as you're okay with its quirks!

-
The staff are lovely and welcoming, and there's plenty of friendly banter with the locals.
-
Great atmosphere for a chat and a pint, especially if you're after that down-to-earth vibe.
Cons
-
The place feels a bit outdated and hasn't seen much investment in a while, which shows in the decor.
-
It's quite small, so it might get cramped if it's busy.
-
Cleanliness could do with some improvement, particularly in the toilets.
-
Some folks have had less than stellar experiences, so it might not suit everyone.

Popped in for a quick beer. Pleasantly surprised by the price!
Enjoyed chatting to the owner and the other customers, we live in Scotland so nice bit of friendly banter.
First time visit, very nice down to earth pub,no Aires and graces what I like.
Simply, good beer, good atmosphere and pleasant staff,I will be back.
Very old pub, very small, toilets arent nicest .not the cleanest. Staff are lovely. Clearly No money has been invested in this pub for a long time. Drinks are reasonable priced.
I don't often write reviews, however, I feel that this place was that poor that it requires it to prevent anyone else from experiencing it.
Whilst on a day trip to Newcastle we decided use the ferry service to cross the Tyne, afterwords whilst walking to the metro station to get back to the city thought it would be nice to drop in for a quick pint this bar.
The first issue arose was trying to enter the bar. My friend had to push profusely at the door to try and get it to open, eventually he got it opened and I tried to follow, which only resulted in getting it slammed in my face. However when I finally did get in I had to stand behind it due to the bar having similar proportions to a small living room, thus having no where else to stand. Several seconds later I almost got knocked over whenever someother unfortunate sole that was entering slammed the door into me.
The pub was small and cluttered, so much so that you had to push through a sea of day time drunks to even get to the bar.
Eventually we got served by a fairly friendly lady, and preceded to look for a spot to sit, upon discovering that there was a room next door we fought our way through the doorway and got a seat.
The next issue was how intimidated we felt by getting pointed and shouted at by the people in the next room. We soon overlooked this whenever a lady stormed in with a large pitbull dog that she could just about control, it jumped up on me whilst she looked us up and down. She didn't say anything to us, but turned to the other people and demended to find out who we were and what we were doing... nothing like visitors feel welcome. Anyway she then turned to us (at this point she pulled the dog away from me) She aggressively notified us that she was the landlady and she wanted to see ID. We presented her with it, for her to spend a surprising amount of time looking at it to then inform my friend that he was two years younger that the Dob on his licence?
Her and the dog then tried to leave whilst the dog knock a drink over with a table.
We took this opportunity to leave and I would not recommend this bar to any tourists.
