About This Pub
Ah, the Maltsters – it's one of those classic pubs that feels like a proper local haunt, rebuilt back in 1975 but with roots going way back to 1898 with McMullen. I have to say, what really stands out is the warm welcome from the staff; they're spot on, making it a great place to unwind with a pint of their locally brewed ales or catch some live sport in the public bar. The lounge area is dead relaxing, and with options for outdoor seating, it's ideal for a sunny afternoon. Plus, being so close to the station, it's super handy for a quick stop-off. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few tales of them running low on popular beers, which is a shame if you're set on something specific, and that 'locals only' comment from one review left me a bit puzzled – not the best for visitors just passing through. They don't do food, but you can nip to the nearby takeaways and bring it in, which is practical but not quite the full package. Overall, with a solid 4.1 rating from the crowd, it's worth a visit if you're in the area, but maybe go in with realistic expectations and check what's on tap first. It's got that community feel, but like any spot, it's not perfect – still, I'd recommend giving it a go for a laid-back night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
It's got a great selection of drinks, including locally brewed real ales, world beers, cocktails, and popular wines – perfect for a relaxed evening.
-
Conveniently located near Cheshunt station, so it's easy to pop in for a quick pint before or after your journey.
-
They've got a traditional vibe with pub games and live Sky and TNT Sports, plus it's dog-friendly and has a lovely garden area for when the weather's nice.
-
Reasonable prices make it a solid spot for a casual get-together, and you can even hire the space for private events like birthdays or wakes.
Cons
-
There have been a few reports of them running out of popular drinks like Stella or Strongbow, which can be a bit disappointing if that's what you're after.
-
One odd experience mentioned was being told it's for 'locals only', which might make newcomers feel a tad unwelcome.
-
They don't serve food on-site, though you can bring in takeaways from nearby places – it's not ideal if you're hoping for a full meal.
-
The atmosphere could use a bit more entertainment, like a jukebox, as some folks have noted it's missing that extra spark.
-
Recent reviews show a dip in satisfaction, with a few grumbles about management and stock issues, so it might not always hit the mark.

Bit of an odd experience - wasn't sure if they were open so gave them a call to ask. Was told they were open but to "locals only."
Decent little pub for a pint or 4 before getting on or off at cheshunt station
This place has become a joke I've been drinking here for four years non stop now and for the very first time under new management in fours years they have run out of stella, foster and strongbow is on its way out !!! I can't believe this who evere is running this place couldn't run a bath !
Great wee pub in Cheshunt. Lovely staff and friendly locals. Good prices too
They don't do food, but there are a plethora of take aways surrounding the pub and you can take the food to the pub eat it there.
Highly recommended.
I had a lovely time at this family run pub! All the staff were so welcoming especially Lisa! The only thing missing was some decent music...... a jukebox is definitely needed!
