About This Pub
Ah, the Lodge in Alvaston – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local gem, especially if you're popping in after a stroll around Calke Abbey or just wanting to catch the big game. I love how they've got that flame-grilled food down pat; those burgers are just the thing for a hearty meal without spending a fortune. And if you're out with the family or your furry mate, it's spot on – they go all out with dog treats and even host fun events like Christmas dress-ups, which sound like a laugh and a half. The sports setup is brilliant too, with all the major matches on screen, making it a go-to for rugby or football enthusiasts. But, let's be honest, it does get rammed sometimes, and that's when things can go a bit pear-shaped – long queues, food that's not quite up to scratch, like a steak that's more well-done than you'd asked for, or breakfasts that arrive cold. Plus, I've heard a few tales about the facilities not being as clean as they'd ought to be, which is a shame because otherwise, it's got such a warm vibe. Overall, if you time your visit right and keep expectations realistic, you'll likely have a top-notch time; it's all about that balance of good grub, great company, and a bit of live action.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is generally spot on, with tasty flame-grilled options like burgers that hit the spot after a long walk or a day out.
-
It's super dog-friendly, with treats at the bar, fresh water outside, and even fun events like dog dress-up competitions that make for a brilliant family day.
-
A cracking place for catching live sports, whether it's the Women's Euros, rugby, or cricket, with Sky Sports and TNT keeping things lively.
-
Prices are really reasonable, making it an easy choice for a casual night out without breaking the bank.
-
The atmosphere is welcoming and family-oriented, with facilities like WiFi and a car park adding to the convenience.
Cons
-
It can get absolutely packed at times, leading to long waits for food and service that might not be as snappy as you'd hope.
-
Some folks have had dodgy experiences with food quality, like undercooked steaks or cold breakfasts, which puts a dampener on things.
-
The toilets have been reported as less than ideal, with a few mentions of them being in a right state, which isn't what you want mid-pint.
-
Service can be a bit hit or miss; one minute you're served straight away, the next you're waiting ages with staff who might not know the menu inside out.

Called in today on the way back from Elvaston Castle with my 2 dogs.Dog treats were available to buy at the bar, fresh water barrel outside with CLEAN water bowls for the dogs. I was able to sit undercover or inside. I was served straight away with a refreshing Fanta.
This was our first time at The Lodge and the food was really nice, i really enjoyed the cheesy bbq stack burger and it was a good size too (cheap coleslaw on the side though).
The fries were nice and crispy.
It was really busy though - I suggest going when it isn’t as busy and sitting out the way as we were sat at a table in front of the bar by the entrance, it was off putting people staring as they came in.
Minimal effort well done steak asked for rare toilets were disgusting blood all in urinal. It's local to me but won't be rushing back
Won't be coming again! No more 2 for 1 breakfast. No brown sauce at all with breakfast, offered me barbecue sauce instead. 🤣Beer prices gone up, cold bacon served after waiting for half an hour in pretty much empty pub on Sunday. Bloke behind counter don't know anything about the menu and not bothered about it at all like it hasn't got anything to do with him. Didn't even know if they serve vegetarian breakfast. Very disappointing after coming to The Lodge for years! I'll spend my money elsewhere, thanks!
We went to the lodge for the dog Christmas dress up competition for McMillan fundraising, and it was amazing! All the dogs were dressed as santas and reindeers, so cute. They even had santa come and select the winners😁 honestly the best morning Ive ever had!!! Dogs dressed up in a pub what more could you want 🩷 10/10 loved it
