About This Pub
Ah, let me tell you about Host Grill – it's this lovely restaurant and bar tucked into the heart of Bishop’s Stortford, right in that striking Corn Exchange building. I've got to say, it's one of those places that really hits the mark for a good night out or a family Sunday lunch. The food is a real highlight; we're talking delicious modern European dishes with fresh, seasonal twists, like those massive Yorkshire puddings with tender beef or vibrant vegan options that keep things interesting. And don't get me started on the cocktails – they're expertly made with fresh fruits, paired perfectly with their extensive wine list. The terrace is just brilliant for soaking up the sun or enjoying a special event, and from the reviews, it sounds like the team bends over backwards to make sure everything runs smoothly, whether it's a wedding reception or a casual tapas session. On the flip side, it can be a bit on the quiet side sometimes, which might not thrill you if you're after a lively buzz, and the entrance is a little hidden, so you might walk past it at first. Plus, the opening times look a tad muddled, which could catch you out. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone in the area looking for reliable, tasty grub and friendly service – I'd definitely pop in if you're nearby, just maybe check the hours first to avoid any surprises!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think tender roasts with fresh veggies, huge Yorkshire puds, and tasty tapas that's perfect for sharing, especially with plenty of gluten-free options to suit everyone.
-
Service is always warm and attentive; the staff really go the extra mile, like making perfect cocktails or handling events such as weddings with a smile.
-
The terrace is a winner, offering a lovely spot overlooking the town with great vibes, especially on a sunny day, and it's ideal for special occasions or just unwinding with drinks.
-
They've got a cracking selection of cocktails, beers, wines, and even vegan dishes, all made with fresh, seasonal produce that keeps things exciting.
-
It's family-friendly and great for events, with options like Sunday roasts or Christmas menus that make it feel welcoming for all sorts of gatherings.
Cons
-
It can sometimes feel a bit quiet, which might not suit those after a buzzing atmosphere, as one visit mentioned it being a tad subdued upstairs.
-
The entrance is tucked away, so it might be easy to miss if you're not familiar with the area, potentially putting off first-timers.
-
Operating hours seem a bit confusing from what I've seen, with overlapping schedules listed, which could lead to some uncertainty about when it's open.

As always, a lovely, family Sunday roast today … tender beef, lots of fresh veggies, HUGE Yorkshire pudding and crispy potatoes. The service was excellent too. Thank you! See you again soon! 🥰
Absolutely fantastic Roast @ Host today. 4 of us, all had different roasts and all were just perfect. Big shout out to Billy upstairs in the terrace bar, made us perfect cocktails. And to George in the restaurant, fab service 👌 👍🥂
We had a lovely dinner at the Host Lounge Bar, which is the bit at the top. The entrance is tucked away a bit, so people might not know it's there or open (it was a bit quiet, hence one star less for the atmosphere). The food (tapas) and cocktails were really good and the staff were super friendly. Will definitely visit again.
We booked our wedding reception at Host on their outdoor terrace on August 31st and it was AMAZING! Amelie the supervisor worked her socks off all day, (and night!) as did the rest of the waiting staff. The tapas was fantastic and service excellent, they couldn’t have been more attentive. We even returned in the evening for a last minute sit down meal for 10 in the main restaurant where again, service and food was impeccable. Fabulous time had by all, thank you so much for making our day so memorable.
I came here twice recently. Once to have tapas and drinks upstairs in the outdoor area, and once to have a family roast dinner downstairs in the restaurant.
The outdoor area had a great vibe, music, nice and lively. Staff were nice. The tapas was delicious and had lots of gluten free options!
We ordered Prosciutto, Manchego, Garlic Prawns, Cauliflower & Patatas Bravas.
For the Sunday roast we had 2 roast beef, 1 adult and 2 kids roast chicken and 1 medley which was beef, chicken and pork belly. All of the roasts came with a Yorkshire pudding, a pig in blanket (sausage wrapped in bacon), roast potatoes, veg and gravy 🤤
For dessert we had 2 kids ice-cream, a chocolate fondant and 3 sticky toffee pudding 🤤
It was great service and a delicious meal.
