About This Pub

Ah, the Horse & Jockey – it's one of those local gems in Birstall that really captures the heart of a traditional pub. From what I've gathered from the reviews and details, it's all about that welcoming feel where you can chat with the regulars and enjoy a well-poured pint without breaking the bank. The landlady sounds like a star, making sure everyone feels included, and there are some brilliant drink deals that keep things lively, especially if you're tuning into the live sports action. It's affordably priced and open most of the day, which is spot on for a casual catch-up with friends. On the downside, though, there have been a few tales of disruptive sorts spoiling the mood, and it's a shame if your go-to beer isn't on tap. Still, for anyone after an authentic, no-fuss pub experience in Batley, I'd say it's well worth popping in – just keep your expectations realistic for a straightforward spot focused on drinks and community spirit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly locals and a landlady who makes everyone feel at home, just like a proper village pub.
  • They serve well-kept beers and have some cracking drink offers, making it a great spot for a budget-friendly night out.
  • It's got that traditional charm with plenty of seating and a decent pool table, perfect for a relaxed game with mates.
  • Live sports like football and rugby on the screens add to the buzz, so it's ideal if you're up for watching the big matches.
  • Being open seven days a week from 11 AM, it's conveniently located for a quick pint after work or on the weekend.
Cons
  • There can be the occasional disruptive visitor who overdoes it, which might put a damper on things now and then.
  • Some specific beers, like the one mentioned, aren't always available, so you might miss out on your favourite.
  • It seems a bit straightforward without much in the way of food options, so if you're after a full meal, you might need to look elsewhere.

Feels like a proper village pub - you wouldn’t know you were just down the road from the city. Being from a village myself, it’s been lovely to find a little bit of home in the town 😊

Nice pint well kept beer a shame about the thuggish mouth breather who couldn't handle his drink there's always one.

1st visit yesterday with partner and family members. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Locals chatted with us and made us feel welcome. We'll definitely be back. Has more of a traditional pub feel which has charm.

Very cozy drinking pub. Plenty of seating and a good pool table that doesn't cost the earth. Only dropped a star because the 'white rat' beer isn't available now
