About This Pub
Ah, the Hope & Anchor – it's one of those pubs that really captures the spirit of London, doesn't it? Tucked away in Islington, this Grade II listed gem has been around since 1850 and still hosts brilliant live music nights and events, just like the legends who played there back in the day. The staff are an absolute treat, always ready with a smile and a bit of banter that makes you feel right at home, and it's spot on for grabbing a pint with friends or even bringing along the dog for a relaxed vibe. They've got a smashing range of beers and cocktails that are perfect for sharing, especially during their summer specials. On the flip side, it does tend to get packed to the rafters during gigs or peak times, which can make it a bit of a squeeze, and if you're hoping for a peaceful chat, the lively atmosphere might drown out your words. Plus, while the food gets a nod for things like those massive croissants, it doesn't seem to be the main draw, so you might want to pop in more for the drinks and entertainment rather than a hearty meal. All in all, it's a cracking choice if you're up for a bit of fun, but perhaps not ideal for a quiet night in.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic atmosphere is an absolute delight, with its Grade II listed building dating back to 1850, making you feel like you're stepping into London's rich past.
-
Friendly staff who are always up for a chat and make the place feel welcoming, just like chatting with old mates over a pint.
-
Live music and events, including gigs and theatre upstairs, keep things lively and exciting for a proper night out.
-
It's dog-friendly and family-friendly, so you can pop in with your furry companion or the little ones without a worry.
-
A cracking selection of drinks, from fine ales and craft beers to summer cocktails, perfect for sharing with friends.
Cons
-
It can get rather busy, especially during live events or on weekends, which might mean a bit of a wait at the bar.
-
The vibe is quite energetic, so if you're after a quiet, cosy corner for a deep conversation, it might not always hit the mark.
-
Food options seem a tad limited based on what's mentioned, like those giant croissants, so it could feel more drink-focused than a full meal out.

What a gem! Came here on my birthday for afters - late night drinks and a juke box (remember to bring pound coins!). Also met a lovely dog called Dusty (attaching a photo). The guy behind the bar (think his name is Kieran) has great BANTS! Will definitely be back for all the lolz
A truly historical and atmospheric pub & venue! Really enjoyed playing live there! Super friendly staff and sound engineer!
Amazing atmosphere, I've been coming here after work for a while now, I've managed to befriend the bar staff who are all absolutely lovely. A shout out to Tatiana and Alexi both have been a big reason to come back time after time.
I wpuld HIGHLY recommend this venue to any, pub goer, theatre goer and gig goer!
Great gig for London music showcase at the legendary Hope and Anchor pub! Friendly staff and amazing night of music.
Don't make the mistake of thinking the giant croissants are just a big meal for one. They're a meal for 4! Despite their size, they were wonderfully cooked, crumbly and crunchy outside but soft and tasty on the inside
