About This Pub
Ah, the Highwayman – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a welcoming local haunt, tucked away near Hitchin with easy access from the Great North Road. I have to say, what really stands out is their carvery; it's fresh every day with those tender, glazed meats and a proper Yorkie pud to boot – you'd be hard-pressed not to leave feeling chuffed. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and quick to sort out any bookings, which makes it ideal for family get-togethers or even a casual Sunday roast. Plus, being dog-friendly adds a nice touch if you're out for a walk in the area. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard from a few that the menu can be a tad restrictive at times, especially if you're fancying something like seafood, and when it gets bustling, things might slow down a bit, which could put a damper on your visit. All in all, it's a solid choice for a bite and a bevvy, especially if you're after good value and a homely vibe, but it's worth keeping in mind that, like any pub, it has its ups and downs – just pop in with an open mind and you're in for a treat.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The carvery is absolutely spot on, with fresh, slow-cooked meats and all the trimmings – it's a real treat for a satisfying meal.
-
Staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's a proper family-friendly spot, with a warm atmosphere that's perfect for gatherings or a relaxed day out.
-
Dog-friendly vibes mean you can bring your four-legged mate along, which adds to the laid-back charm.
-
Great value for money, especially with their deals on small plates and carvery options that won't break the bank.
Cons
-
Sometimes menu choices can be a bit limited, like if you're after specific dishes such as seafood, which might leave you wanting more.
-
It can get pretty busy at peak times, leading to waits for service or food that might not be ideal for a quick stop.
-
Not every visit is flawless; a few folks have mentioned inconsistent food quality, so it pays to go in with realistic expectations.

Came for a family Fathers Day meal.
Manager was very helpful in adding an extra 4 diners to our booking. Every one in our party of 12 enjoyed their food. Carvery was excellent so were the main menu meals ordered. Service was very good considering how busy it was.
You get excellent food for a very reasonable price.
We have had quite a few family gatherings here and have never found anything to complain about. All the staff are very friendly & helpful.
Would highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed.
I must say I posted a not good review months back. But I must admit the pub has got much better the staff are friendly & you don't have to wait to be served. Overall a great local pub 👍
I came here this afternoon with my daughter to meet my mum for a late lunch, we had a yummy carvery with all the trimmings and some delicious starters! Carriannes hospitality was exceptionally kind and caring, service was great, I strongly would recommend this pub to others and would definitely be coming back again soon!
We were welcomed warmly by an older gentleman who greeted us with genuine care and friendliness—it felt more like being welcomed by a friend than a customer, which was a lovely start. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives ended.
We were immediately informed that several seafood options—and other items—were unavailable. Even after trying to adapt our choices around this, we were told that more items were off the menu.
When we ordered drinks, they arrived noticeably under-filled, which left the impression that profit was being prioritised over customer satisfaction.
The food itself was disappointing in both presentation and quality. My burger looked hastily assembled with little attention to detail, and my son’s burger was so tough he couldn’t enjoy it.
The restaurant’s cleanliness was also concerning. Our table still had dried sauce on it from previous diners, suggesting it hadn’t been cleaned properly in quite some time.
Had we not been with friends, we would likely have left.
To add to this, the female toilets were out of order, and only three out of five urinals in the men’s were operational. Worse still, the hand soap dispensers were visibly mouldy, which is unacceptable in any establishment serving food.
It’s a shame, as some of the staff clearly have the potential to thrive in a better-run environment. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning and would advise others to steer clear.
We had a lovely meal and a few games of pool at the highway man. It had a lovely atmosphere and the staff was friendly and gave great customer service with a smile ☺ p.s it's a dog friendly place too.
