About This Pub

Ah, the Granta— it's one of those pubs that just feels like a hidden gem in Cambridge, right by the water, where you can sit out in the beer garden and watch the world go by with a cold one in hand. I've heard from mates that it's brilliant for a sunny afternoon session or even a casual dinner, with that blend of cosy traditional vibes and a bit of modern flair that makes it welcoming for everyone, whether you're popping in for drinks or a full meal. The staff are always up for a chat and really add to the friendly atmosphere, and from what folks have said, the food can be a real treat with options like those tasty nachos or sharing plates that go down a storm. But, let's be honest, it does have its off moments— like when it gets packed and you're left twiddling your thumbs waiting for your order, or if you end up with a dish that's not quite up to scratch, such as an overcooked chicken option that left one person a bit disappointed. Still, with reasonable prices and perks like being dog-friendly, it's a solid choice for a get-together, as long as you pick a quieter time to avoid the rush. Overall, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area; just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The waterside location is absolutely stunning, with a peaceful beer garden overlooking the river—perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying a pint on a nice day.
  • It's got that lovely mix of traditional charm and modern touches inside, making it a welcoming spot for a casual catch-up or a special occasion.
  • Staff are really friendly and helpful, which adds to the relaxed vibe and makes you feel right at home.
  • Food options are generally spot on, with tasty choices like nachos and sharing plates that hit the spot, and they've got vegan and vegetarian options too.
  • Prices are reasonable for what you get, so you won't feel like you're breaking the bank for a good meal and a drink.
Cons
  • It can get pretty crowded, especially on sunny weekends, leading to long waits for drinks and food that might put a dampener on things.
  • Some dishes fall short— like that chicken Kiev that was a bit tough and greasy— so it's worth being picky with your order.
  • Service might slow down when it's busy, which could mean you're waiting around more than you'd like for your round.

Good spot for a nice view. It was busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon, but we managed to find one free table. It was a long wait for the drinks and food, the wait likely triggered by the pub crowding. Food was nice, ordered nachos and chicken sharer plate. Nachos were really nice. Prices reasonable.

Lovely location and atmosphere. Staff really great but the food wasn't great. I had chicken Kiev, which was a piece of coated chicken fried to within an inch of it's life and then drizzled with garlic butter. It was tough and greasy. The salad was two lettuce leaves with a few shavings of cheese. So disappointing.

Only had a few drinks no food, but a really lovely setting next to the river.

I had a great time during my visit at the Granta. I had already visited the pub in the recent past, but this time was more special as I spent the whole night with special people. Everything was really nice: the location, which is near where I usually stay during the day; the ambient, which is cozy, warm and comfortable; the staff, who was friendly and efficient; and the food, which was tasty, especially the seasoned fries, despite the burger's meat being a little bit hard. The only downside, I think, is being a little pricey (even with student discount). I visited the pub during the night, but I think that it must have an astonishing view of the Cam river during the day, especially during punting activities. When I first looked at the physical menu, I was surprised by the similarity with another pub's menu, Fort St George, which is essentially identical. Then I realised that both pubs are owned by the same holding, Greene King in this case. This is not immediately obvious if you don't know the story behind pubs at Cambridge. Coincidentally or not, the hard burger's meat was the same at the other pub 😅 I would say this pub is really cool and cozy. I recommend it to anyone looking for a nice pub at Cambridge and I intend to return in the near future.

I was there for a couple of drinks with friends. The place is amazing, front river. When it's sunny you would just spend hours there. Staff is very nice, never tried the food but my friend did and she said it's amazing!
