About This Pub
Ah, the Golden Lion – it's one of those places that just warms your heart from the moment you step in. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; folks rave about the steak pie and linguine, all made with that genuine home-cooked care that you don't find everywhere these days. The staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, adding a personal touch that turns a simple meal into a proper treat. It's got this lovely rustic feel with a beer garden that's ideal for soaking up the countryside air, and being dog-friendly means it's spot on for a relaxed day out with your four-legged friend. On the flip side, it's tucked away in a quiet spot, which is brilliant for unwinding but might not suit if you're craving a more vibrant night out. Plus, with some days closed or limited hours, you might need to plan ahead. All in all, it's a gem for anyone looking for good grub, comfy stays, and that homely atmosphere – I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area, just keep in mind it's more about enjoying the simple pleasures than a wild evening.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely brilliant – that homemade steak pie and linguine are real highlights, just like the reviews say, with proper home-cooked flavours that'll have you coming back for more.
-
The staff are so welcoming and friendly, always ready with a smile and that personal touch that makes you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for lunch or staying the night.
-
It's got a lovely rustic charm with a characterful ambiance, perfect for relaxing in the beer garden or enjoying a quiet pint in the countryside.
-
Being dog-friendly is a real plus; it's great to bring your furry mate along for a bite or a stay without any fuss.
-
The hotel rooms sound comfy and modern, with nice touches like free Wi-Fi and plush bedding, making it a solid spot for a getaway near Coventry or Birmingham.
Cons
-
It can feel a bit out of the way in the rural setting, so if you're after a lively, bustling pub scene, it might not quite hit the mark.
-
The opening hours are a tad limited, like being closed on Thursdays or only open in the evenings on some days, which could cramp your plans if you're spontaneous.
-
As it's a hotel too, things might lean a bit more towards a relaxed, quiet vibe rather than a proper energetic pub atmosphere, which isn't for everyone.

I knew this pub 40 years ago
It was the best in the area, then. Its now being run by Jim and Claudi's daughter and, with little touches, is even better. The linguine is to die for - perfection.
We had a really nice stay at the hotel, location is great as it’s quiet. Friendly staff, tasty breakfast, good drinks as well. Definitely gonna be back next time we’re in the area
We did not stay here, just popped in for the first time, on an afternoon for some lunch.
The food was exceptional, real home cooked pub food.
We highly recommend the steak pie, amazing everything with lots of gravy. It's a beautiful old pub, very friendly and good beer.
So hard to find places like this, an alternative to the pub chains.
Great place to stay, definitely an improvement over the usual chain hotels I use when working away. Food and service was second to none! Will absolutely be back.
Pretty much my favourite pub. I've been coming to the 'egg' for decades from a teenager to now (a grown up of 50+ years). Lovely ambiance, character, beer and food. I was talking to the landlady today and didn't realise the pub had been in the family for some 90 years. I try to get to the egg every couple of months for lunch...never disappointed...the steak pie is lovely. Sat is the bar today right next to the wood burner which really added to the experience. People need to use pubs like this more not just for beer and food but also a place to meet people.
