About This Pub
Ah, Garrods at the Furzedown Hotel – it's one of those places that really warms your heart with its family-run charm and that genuine, homely vibe they've kept going for over six decades. I have to say, the food steals the show; imagine tucking into a massive plate of fish and chips or a beautifully cooked sea bass that's full of flavour and presented just right – it's all so hearty and satisfying, you'd be hard-pressed not to leave with a smile. The staff are an absolute delight too, always on hand with a friendly chat or to accommodate any last-minute requests, and it's lovely to see they even make an effort for furry friends. Plus, with its seafront spot, you're treated to cracking views while sipping on a well-chosen cocktail or wine. But, let's be honest, it's not without its quirks – the decor feels a bit stuck in the past, with worn chairs and dim lighting that could use a spruce-up to make it feel more inviting. And while the mains are winners, some of the puds haven't impressed everyone, and those limited evening hours might leave you wanting more flexibility for a casual drop-in. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed meal or a special occasion, especially if you're staying nearby, but it might not be the first pick for a wild night out – still, I'd pop in again for the grub alone!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think generous portions of tasty dishes like fish and chips or braised beef cheek that leave you feeling well satisfied.
-
Service is warm and attentive; the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, even sorting last-minute tables or catering for pets.
-
They've got a great selection of drinks, including wines and cocktails, perfect for unwinding after a day out.
-
It's a family-run spot with a friendly atmosphere that's been welcoming folks for over 60 years, making it feel like a proper local gem.
-
Right on the seafront with lovely views, and it's handy for exploring Great Yarmouth's attractions.
Cons
-
The place has a bit of an outdated feel, with furniture and decor that could do with a refresh to brighten things up.
-
Some of the desserts don't quite hit the mark, as a few folks mentioned they weren't as impressive as the mains.
-
Opening hours are limited to evenings only, and it's closed one day a week, which might not suit everyone looking for a quick pint.
-
It feels more hotel-focused than a buzzing pub, so if you're after a lively atmosphere, it might come across as a tad quiet.

The fish and chips provided was very good and big, so much I could not finish it. The morning breakfast was again big and delicious and included in the room cost.
Absolutely perfect. Excellent menu choices, beautifully cooked & presented. Waitress & wine waiter were very attentive. Highly recommended. (Lovely liquor coffee )
I had grilled sea bass. I also had my small dog with me, she was perfectly catered for too.
Found nothing wrong with food, was tasty and fresh. Pork was succulent and dessert of apricot tart was lovely. Good selection of drinks on tap too.
Being brutally honest, the place is dated, needs a revamp. Some new chairs and tablecloths with a brighter lighting would do wonders.
10 of us were staying here and hadn’t booked to eat. But when we decided to do so on Saturday evening, a table was made available with 15 minutes notice (even though they had a party of 30 coming later)
Food options were good and mains were very tasty.
We weren’t so keen on some of the puds as they were served with vegan ice cream which we did not like but apart from that we had no issues
Great service and happy to help
Fantastic food. Ordered the braised beef cheek and it was just brilliant. The service was great and all the staff were so lovely. Would very highly recommend if you’re looking for somewhere nice to eat. We started with bread and balsamic vinegar - but this was definitely not needed as the main was filling enough.
