About This Pub

Ah, the Fox & Crown in Sutton-in-Ashfield – it's one of those classic pubs that really comes alive during big sports events, like the Women's Euros or the Lions tour, with screens everywhere and a cheerful crowd getting stuck in. I love how they've got that flame-grilled vibe going on, and from what I've heard, the steak sizzler is a proper winner – generous portions and spot-on cooking for a steal. It's got all the nice touches too, like being dog-friendly and having a beer garden for those sunny days. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; some folks have had a rough time with the food, saying it's gone downhill with undercooked bits or just plain disappointing meals, which is a pity for a spot that used to be a favourite. Service can be friendly enough, but it falls apart when things get hectic, with mix-ups on orders and billing errors that might leave you frustrated. Overall, if you're up for a casual night out with mates to watch the game, it's worth popping in, just maybe keep an eye on the details and go in with realistic expectations – it's got heart, but it needs a bit of fine-tuning to get back to its best.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is really lively, especially outside in the beer garden, making it a great spot for catching up with friends over a pint.
  • Friendly staff and a welcoming vibe, particularly when they're showing live sports like the Women's Euros or rugby matches.
  • Some cracking food deals, like that rump steak sizzler for just £8 – it's well-sized, cooked just right, and comes with proper sides.
  • It's dog-friendly with loads of facilities, including a car park and outdoor areas, so you can bring the whole family or your furry mate.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; some dishes have been described as disgusting or undercooked, which is a real shame for a place that used to shine.
  • Service isn't always on point – it can get disorganised when busy, with staff seeming a bit lost and issues like being served out of order.
  • There have been problems with billing and extras, like overcharging or not honouring discounts, which leaves a bit of a sour taste.
  • Hygiene slips occasionally, with reports of dirty cutlery and soggy food, so it's worth double-checking things when you visit.

Nice pub good atmosphere outside but the food is disgusting. Has been now for a couple of years the food challenges were great but now they've got rid of them and instead serve rubbish really needs looking into it will be the death of this once great pub.

Served out of order. Looked like staff didn’t know what was going on or had urgency. Yes it was busy and glasses everywhere, but maybe less vaping outside and actually helping would’ve made a big difference. Great half of Guinness!

Had rump steak sizzler here few days ago. Steak was good size and cooked perfectly came with chips and peas and steak came on bed of onions on the sizzler plate. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Steak was £8 bargain. Recommended this place

I was overcharged, instead of two meals for £13.99 I was charged for two full price meals and I was told my blue light card could be used but it couldn't. I wasn't offered any apology by the manager and when she refunded me I now have to wait up to 5 days to get my money back. I then had to pay again for two more meals. If this wasn't bad enough when my meal arrived it was inedible. The pastry had been pre cooked and warmed up, it was so hard you couldn't get a knife through it. A big mistake and we won't be back.

The cutlery was filthy, including the steak knife brought on the plate of Mixed Grill. All the cutlery in the table holders was filthy as we checked. Asked for French mustard was given English, not impressed as I have a reaction to English Mustard Sausage was undercooked Served on a bed of wet soggy onions, dripping in water… The steak / Chicken & Gammon was edible 8/10 Who eats this rubbish & more to the point who directs this.. No one asked if everything was ok.. Manager very attentive, when we walked in…after this.. Your sat down… paid for your meals, NEXT.. I’m so pleased I didn’t take friends there.. I’ve not been in a chain food pub for years & I can see why I haven’t. Sorry it’s not for me..
