About This Pub
Ah, Speed the Plough – it's one of those unassuming pubs that just hits the spot when you're after a genuine, no-fuss night out. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff are absolute stars; they make everyone feel welcome, whether you're a regular or just passing through, like that chap who popped in while waiting for his car. The ales and lagers are reasonably priced and well-kept, and it's got this inviting garden where you can soak up the sun with your dog in tow – as long as you keep things tidy, of course. Events like the Tuesday folks nights add a nice touch of community fun, with people strumming guitars and sharing a laugh. On the flip side, it's a bit of a shame about the food; it's not on offer unless you've booked it for something special, so if you're peckish, you might end up disappointed or needing to grab a takeaway. The hours can be tricky to pin down too, and without a website, it's not the most straightforward place to check out online. All in all, though, with its solid 4.7 rating, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a proper pub experience – just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll likely have a great time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly welcoming and go out of their way to make you feel at home, which really adds to the cosy vibe.
-
It's a proper traditional pub with well-kept ales and lagers at good prices, ideal for a relaxed pint with mates.
-
Dog-friendly setup means you can bring your furry friend along, as long as they're on a lead and you tidy up after them.
-
There's a lovely little pub garden that's perfect for chilling in the sun, especially on those rare sunny days in the Midlands.
-
They host events like folks nights on Tuesdays, which sound like a fun way to enjoy live music and a bit of community spirit.
Cons
-
Food options are pretty limited – they don't serve it regularly, only if you request it in advance for special occasions, so you might need to plan ahead or head elsewhere for a bite.
-
The operating hours seem a bit inconsistent from what's listed, which could catch you out if you're popping in on a whim.
-
With no website or online presence, it's not the easiest place to get info on, so you might have to rely on word of mouth or a quick Google search.
-
It's a small, local spot that might feel a tad out of the way if you're not from the area, like in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Fantastic pub
Staff always go out there way to welcome everyone 😀
Lovely friendly little Henry ( dog)
Waiting around for work to be done on my car and found this pub during my wait. A very warm welcome to a none local, was in the smoking shelter and the owner still took the time to come out and check if everything was okay. Which is amazing. If I didn't live so far I would love to call "Speed the Plough" my local!
We had works reunion here, its a pub, a proper pub, dinner time event made welcome.
We are using the twice a year, good priced ales and lagers and warm atmosphere. It'll do 4 us.
They don't do food unless it's requested in advance for funerals or parties etc. always a good atmosphere nice little pub garden to chill in the sun and dogs are welcome if kept on a lead and any mess cleaned up. The Best nights are Tuesday nights It's a folks night. Come watch people play their guitars and sing. If you can play then bring yours down and join the list. Saturday nights are Karaoke nights come join and sing if you can or watch. And Monday nights are for those who can play or want to learn how to play a guitar. There is a teacher who will try his best to walk around you all and teach you corda etc and give you home work to practice. And it's all free so come down and check it out. Or for a quieter pint come any other night and chill. 😁
Arrived wet and exhausted after 4 hour drive. Made to feel welcome. Well kept ale and because it was a quiet night and we were hungry the landlord offered one off hot food that was not normally on offer and was delicious. Top marks and many thanks.
