About This Pub
Ah, Ego at Running Mare in Chelmsford – it's one of those places that really grows on you once you're settled in. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is where they truly shine; think fresh, flavour-packed Mediterranean dishes that leave you feeling chuffed, whether it's a hearty Sunday roast or something lighter from the menu. The atmosphere is lovely too, with smart decor that makes the whole spot feel inviting and just right for catching up with mates over a meal. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing – some have mentioned the odd disappointment with things like dry roast potatoes or Yorkshire puds that could do with a bit more TLC. Then there's the space; it's a tad cosy, which means the entrance can feel a bit awkward and cramped when you're waiting, and service might drag on now and then, with a few reports of staff not being as attentive as you'd hope. Still, with such a solid reputation and plenty of positive vibes from regulars, I'd say it's well worth popping in if you're in the area – just keep those little hiccups in mind for a more enjoyable visit.

There can be inconsistencies in food quality, such as dry Yorkshire puddings or roast potatoes that don't quite live up to expectations.

-
Service isn't always up to scratch, with reports of slow responses or a lack of enthusiasm from some staff, leading to a less than ideal start to the evening.

Meal was good. Had the Sunday roast. However Yorkshire puddings were very hard and dry same as the roast potatoes. I'm only basing my experience on this meal. I have not tried anything off the menu.
First time here. The restaurant's location and decor are fantastic. Perhaps a bit small for so many tables, but it's not a serious drawback; that's just my assessment. The entrance is very awkward, cramped for waiting, almost on top of some diners, which is uncomfortable.
The food didn't exceed expectations. There isn't as much variety as the menu claims. However, the presentation of the dishes is a strong point: glasses, special plates, and equipment. 👍
As for the service, they seem to be very attentive and friendly, but they wander between tables and are somewhat distracted, tense from work. I understand; I once worked in the hospitality industry, and it's a frenetic pace. Perhaps some training from the owners for the staff would help a lot.
If I were to go back, it would be to have a drink, have a good time in a good atmosphere, and with no time limit, because it's stressful to be in a nice, warm place and know that there's a time limit. So I would try to go for a drink during non-crowded hours.
I would recommend it, yes, because we don't all have the same experiences and tastes, and that's why I wouldn't stop recommending it. On the contrary, go and enjoy it.
Had a fantastic meal at Ego at The Running Mare in Chelmsford. The food was absolutely delicious – fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. From starters to dessert, everything was spot on. What really made the evening special though was the service. Lucy-Anne looked after us brilliantly – warm, attentive, and genuinely lovely throughout. She made us feel so welcome and added a really personal touch to the evening. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great food and even better service.
My 3rd visit to Ego Running Mare. Took some friends and was enjoyed by us all. Food was delicious but disappointed that the risotto had been removed from the menu. Had been looking forward to that as I’d had it on a previous visit.
On entry at 5.30 we had to wait a while before being seated even though it was empty. The restaurant looked very impressive nicely decorated and clean.
It took a long while before we were served for drinks and able to give our orders over. The waitress was quite flippant on her service towards us , she didn't ask us if we wanted the Monday offer, I had to ask if it was still available but we wasn't given the specific menu until I asked.
The garlic mushrooms were too salty and sickly for me.
The fillet steak was divine although it needed to rest longer as blood juices was on my plate when I cut into it
The lemon tart although beautifully presented was very sharp in taste for my liking.
The restaurant became very busy by 6.30pm and I noticed there needed to be some light background music to lighten up the atmosphere.
On the whole, very good quality food for the price would recommend a visit and wouldn't mind going back to try their Sunday roasts.
