About This Pub

You know, when I think about the Dublin Packet in Chester, it's got that classic pub charm that's hard to beat for a casual pint and some live action on the telly. They've nailed the beer selection with options like a smooth Guinness and a few cask ales that go down a treat, and it's spot on for footy fans with those HD screens blasting Sky Sports and TNT. The staff can be absolute gems, all friendly and chatty, which really makes you feel like part of the crowd, and there's always something to do with games like pool and darts to liven things up. Plus, being right in the heart of historic Chester, it's an ideal stop after a wander around the old streets. On the downside, though, I've heard from a few folks that the atmosphere doesn't always click—sometimes it feels a tad lifeless, especially mid-week. There've been stories of staff getting a bit carried away with their own distractions, like cranking up games over the music, which can kill the mood faster than a bad referee call. And let's not gloss over the food; those pizzas and deals sound tempting, but they can be inconsistent, with some drinks not living up to what you'd expect. All in all, it's worth popping in if you're in the area, but go with an open mind—it's got plenty of good moments, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea every time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Fantastic selection of beers, including a decent pint of Guinness and some cask ales that hit the spot.
  • Brilliant for watching live sports with HD screens showing Sky Sports and TNT—perfect for catching the footy with mates.
  • Friendly and fun staff who often make you feel right at home, adding a bit of warmth to the experience.
  • Loads of entertainment on offer, like pool and darts, to keep things lively on a quiet night.
  • Smack in the middle of historic Chester, making it a great base for exploring the town and grabbing a drink afterwards.
Cons
  • The atmosphere can sometimes feel a bit flat or lacking, especially if it's not a busy night.
  • Occasional distractions from staff, like playing games too loudly, which can really spoil the vibe.
  • Food and drink options are hit and miss—think disappointing prosecco deals or limited choices that don't always deliver.
  • Not every visit lives up to the hype, with some folks finding it underwhelming based on recent experiences.
  • It might not always feel as buzzing as you'd hope, leaving you wishing for a bit more energy in the place.

Terrible pub. No atmosphere. The bar person was pleasant enough, but this place has nothing going for it.

Would have been nice. Curly haired barmaid sat blaring her games out over the music. I moved twice to try and find anywhere where I couldn't hear her games (top volume louder than pub piped music) and in the end said I thought she really was ruining the atmosphere by sitting down and playing games at top volume ruining the atmosphere for customers. I suggested she got headphones. She didn't even apologise and didn't turn her phone down. I work in hospitality myself so don't like to criticize. But if she isn't the owner, owners deserve to know.

Went in on a bank holiday Sunday night. The girl behind the bar was fun and friendly, the food options available - a mars bar. The £12 prosecco bottle deal wasn't actually prosecco, was a vino spumante and frankly horrible. There is a decent pint of Guinness. There are games for patrons to play while they drink (kerplunk, jenga etc). Deapite other places being packed it was quiet as no sports were on. Will try again another night

Decent pint of Guinness. Some cask ales on tap too. Long bar with lots of tables and good quality TV screens. Great place to watch the footy. Decent music too. 5 stars for me.
