About This Pub
Ah, the Crown and Crossed Swords – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away in Shotley Bridge near Consett. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really shines with its welcoming atmosphere and top-quality grub; think succulent pork belly or a cracking Sunday roast that has folks raving and coming back for more. The staff go out of their way to make you feel at ease, even on a busy night, and it's brilliant that they welcome dogs, making it ideal for a family outing or a casual catch-up with mates. Plus, with its historical ties to those old sword-makers, there's a bit of character that sets it apart from your average pub. On the flip side, it's a shame the operating hours aren't spelled out clearly – you don't want to rock up only to find it's not open, which could put a dampener on things. And being a bit off the beaten track might not suit everyone, especially if you're nipping over from further afield. All in all, though, it's got that perfect balance of charm and comfort, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after a proper, homely pub experience in the North East – just plan ahead and you'll have a whale of a time!

The location is spot on for exploring the North East, with easy access to Newcastle and Durham, plus a bit of fascinating history about sword-making that adds a nice touch.
-
Free on-site parking with a permit makes it hassle-free, especially if you're popping in for a stay or a meal after a day out.
Cons
-
Operating hours aren't clearly listed anywhere, which can make planning a visit a bit tricky – you might end up turning up at the wrong time.
-
The business status seems a tad unclear, as it says 'close', which could mean it's not always open when you'd expect, potentially leaving you disappointed.
-
With no price level mentioned, it might catch you off guard if it's on the pricier side, though the rave reviews suggest it's worth every penny.
-
Being on the outskirts of Consett, it could feel a bit out of the way if you're not local, so getting there might take some effort.

Booked in for a 2 night weekend stay while visiting family in the North East, arriving at 8pm on a Friday night. The place was really busy, but the staff were very welcoming on arrival and booked us in promptly and saved a table in the restaurant for food. The food in the restaurant is absolutely amazing, all freshly cooked, good portion sizes and very reasonably priced. A varied choice of foods available on the menu along with the usual pub classics but still ten times better than any pub chain food.
Good selection of beers and usually 3 hand pulled cask ales available, The room was very clean with a good walk in shower. Thanks to everyone on the team for an enjoyable stay and we hope to be back in the not too distant future.
Accepted the host's recommendation of crispy pork belly from the Sunday lunch menu, and it was simply superb. Friendly, attentive staff, and a lovely setting. 'How nice was that food?' became a well worn phrase that afternoon. It's now in my personal hall of fame. Book a table with confidence - you won't be disappointed.
On visiting family in Consett (we're from Manchester) we had a meal here. The menu was really good and we were all very happy with the meals & service. The beer choice was great, atmosphere fab , clientele friendly & dogs made welcome. I look forward to visiting again 😀

We had a really lovely Sunday lunch with you today. The food was good and the staff were so pleasant and welcoming. We couldn’t manage dessert! Have you thought about offering “puddings to go”? We could eat one now! 😂 We will be back.
Great local pub serving great food.Recently had for a starter sticky pork bites which were so nice I could have had more as a main. Then followed by a chefs special of pork loin with smoked mashed potatoes with a black pudding bon bon and peppercorn sauce...fabulous!!
Staff are always helpful and friendly and the atmosphere is great.
It's our go to pub now🙌
