About This Pub

Ah, the Cock & Magpie – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of a community in Whitworth, with its cosy lounge, spacious beer garden, and that genuine friendly feel you don't always find these days. I love how it's set up for all sorts, whether you're there for a quiet drink, a family meal, or even a game of darts in the games room. The nearby walks around Cowm Reservoir make it an ace spot to unwind after some fresh air, and being dog-friendly just adds to the charm. On the flip side, though, I've heard from a few mates that the food can be a mixed bag – some rave about the home-cooked dishes, but others have had disappointing experiences with things like tough steaks or bland roasts, which is a pity when you're paying a moderate price. Service-wise, it's brilliant when it's on form, but there have been times it's fallen short, leaving a sour note. Overall, it's worth a visit if you're in the area, especially for the atmosphere and ales, but maybe keep expectations in check and go on a day when it's firing on all cylinders – you know, like we all do when we're sharing tips over a pint.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is just lovely – it's a proper traditional country pub with a warm, friendly vibe that makes you feel right at home, especially if you're popping in after a walk in the hills.
  • They've got a cracking beer garden and it's dog-friendly, which is brilliant for those of us who like to bring the pooch along for a pint.
  • The service can be spot-on when it's good, with friendly staff who make you feel welcome, and they've got a great selection of Robinsons cask ales to enjoy.
  • It's family-friendly and wheelchair accessible, plus there's a games room for a bit of pool or darts, making it a versatile spot for all sorts.
  • The location near Cowm Reservoir is a real plus – perfect for a post-walk refreshment or even trying out waterskiing nearby.
Cons
  • Food quality can be a bit hit and miss; some meals like the Sunday roast or mixed grill have left a few folks disappointed, with complaints about dry meat and overcooked dishes.
  • Service isn't always up to scratch – a couple of reviews mentioned shocking experiences, which is a shame when the pub has so much potential.
  • Opening hours are limited, with the place closed on Mondays, so it's not ideal if you're looking for a mid-week spot without planning ahead.
  • Based on recent feedback, it seems things might have slipped a tad, as the latest reviews show a lower average rating, suggesting it's not consistently living up to its reputation.

Lovely little pub - we just moved to Whitworth and C&M is literally on our street so we had to check it out. Great atmosphere, friendly service and tasty food. I absolutely recommend and we'll definitely be back.

My sister and myself booked a table here for Sunday lunch to finish off a weekend break in Yorkshire and as its a pub I have always loved for its cosy traditional atmosphere, lovely beer garden and a nice pint of ale, However I have to say the Sunday lunch was very disappointing. The roast beef was of a plentiful portion but very tough and chewy. The vegetables were rock hard, ( I dont mind vegetables being al dente) but these were virtually uncooked and had no taste to them at all , and the gravy was like dishwater running around our plates, and definitely not made with the meat juices so was equally tasteless. The only passable thing was the new and roast potatoes. We sent our plates back and explained why to the waitress. She apologised but explained there was nothing she could do with regards to a refund as the owner was not there. We paid for 2 Sunday lunches that neither of us could stomach and it spoilt the end of what was otherwise a lovely weekend. I think this is very sad after previous times I have eaten here were good.

We came here for a family meal but are quite shocked at the service and the food, the mixed grill for £23.95 was half a plate of chips with rock hard steak you can throw through a window the chicken taste like it was cooked a week ago dry with no taste the sausage wasn't nice either as were the gammon the only thing nice was the blackpudding as it was cooked correctly. For the price I'd expect better! They have a nice garden out back but I couldn't let my son play out there as they let there pet dogs use it as a toilet! I'd avoid this place if you want a meal with family.

What a find, never knew this pub was here, it was Tues eve so only us and 2 more diners in but a few locals having a pint, the food was top notch if I had a criticism, homemade chips and proper cheese on the burger would have been nicer but the gammon and the burger cooked to perfection, service from young girl on bar was impeccable made us feel so welcome, the chef was on holiday so the landlord cooked for us he came to ask if everything was OK, nice guy. Reasonably priced nice country pub feel about the place. 10 out of 10 we will be back.
