About This Pub

Ah, Chilli B – it's one of those hidden gems in Hitchin that I've heard mates rave about, tucked away in a gorgeous old Victorian building that just oozes character. The food's generally spot on when it's good, with their griddles and breakfast stacks being absolute winners for a satisfying bite, and the staff are always so cheerful and attentive, making every visit feel like a proper treat. It's got that relaxed cafe vibe that's ideal for a quick lunch or a lazy weekend catch-up, and the prices are fair, especially with all the fresh options on offer. But, fair's fair, I've seen a few comments floating about that the flavours aren't quite what they used to be since the new owners stepped in – things like sandwiches losing their punch, which is a bit of a shame for a place that used to be a go-to favourite. Still, with high ratings overall and that lovely garden area, it's worth popping in if you're in the area, just maybe stick to the classics and keep expectations in check for a balanced experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is fresh and imaginative, with standout options like their famous griddles and breakfast stacks that really hit the spot for a hearty meal.
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and helpful, making you feel right at home with their friendly service.
  • It's set in a beautifully restored Victorian building, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up over coffee or lunch.
  • Great value for money compared to other spots in Hitchin, with a solid selection of sandwiches, cakes, and breakfast choices that won't break the bank.
  • They're now open on Sundays, which is brilliant for enjoying a lazy weekend brunch without rushing.
Cons
  • Some recent feedback suggests the food has lost a bit of its flavour since the new owners took over, turning once-favourite dishes into something a tad bland.
  • Portions can be on the skimpy side, like with wraps that might leave you wanting more filling for the price you're paying.
  • It's more of a cafe vibe than a proper pub feel, so if you're after a lively evening with pints and chatter, it might not quite fit the bill.
  • With hours wrapping up around 3 PM, it's not ideal for those late-afternoon cravings or a drawn-out day out.

The food isn’t as tasty unfortunately since the new owners have taken over which is unfortunate as this was absolutely my favourite place for a drop in lunch. My usual order is the lord of the bling (normally full of flavour) but this has now become a bland tasteless option. The staff are lovely and great service; just disappointed that the food standard hasn’t remained the same.

Unfortunately the food has gone seriously downhill - the flavours are just not as good as they used to be. And my wrap was half empty!! Once I'd eaten the part of the wrap that actually had filling in, I was basically left with dough. And at that price!! The garden is lovely now - but if the food doesn't get back to how it was they'll lose customers.

A lovely coffee bar with beautiful freshly Made Sandwiches to order. A stunning selection of cakes very friendly helpful service and a great atmosphere. Highly recommended excellent value for money compared with others in hitching.

Delighted to hear that Chilli B’s is now open Sundays, so took my bestie for breakfast. The American pancake stack with crispy bacon and warm blueberry compote didn’t disappoint. No better way to enjoy a lazy weekend. Good friends, great food in a fab cafe with super staff. 10/10 😋

Best sandwiches we've tried in a very long time by far. Found out about Chilli B's by recommendation of an English friend of mine who knows the area well. I've been told this is frequently visited (and with good reason). I went for the Raging Bull sandwich (roast beef -with mustard sauce in my case) which is the one shown on the pictures. This is just one example of the amazing stuff they make at the Chilli B's! The staff was efficient, kind and polite. In fact, we were initially assigned one table with stools , then another was empty and called us so that we could be more comfortable. It was worth every penny. It was our first trip to the UK and I must say coming all the way from Barcelona and finding a place like this is a real joy. Hope to come back at some point because we know where we will be stopping to have lunch! Congratulations to the Chilli B's team and I encourage them to keep up the wonderful service they offer!
