About This Pub

You know, chatting about the Cat & Fiddle feels like sharing tips with mates over a round – it's that kind of unpretentious spot in Ilkeston that's become a go-to for good times. What really stands out is the food; it's proper pub grub with options like juicy steaks or a cracking Sunday roast that leave you satisfied without any fuss, and at prices that make it feel like a bargain. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a laugh and making sure everything runs smoothly, which adds to the cosy, community vibe – especially when there's live sport on, like the big matches that get everyone buzzing. On the other hand, it does have its moments; things can get a bit rammed during peak hours, leading to waits that might put a dampener on things if you're in a rush, and while the offerings are reliable, they're more straightforward than show-stopping. All in all, it's a solid choice for us who fancy a straightforward night out – honest, approachable, and with just enough charm to keep you coming back for more.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is spot on – think delicious pub classics like succulent steaks, burgers, and hunters chicken that always hit the spot
  • Friendly staff and a welcoming landlord who go out of their way to make you feel at home, creating a really warm atmosphere
  • Great value for money with affordable prices and daily specials that make it easy on the wallet
  • Lively vibe with live sports on the telly and events like the UEFA Women's Euros, perfect for a casual catch-up
  • Handy facilities including a beer garden, being dog-friendly, and family-oriented touches that make it versatile for different outings
Cons
  • It can get quite busy and crowded at times, which might mean a wait for your food or a table
  • The grub is solid and reliable but feels a bit standard – nothing that'll blow your socks off, more your everyday pub fare
  • The atmosphere can turn a tad hectic when it's packed, so it might not be the quietest spot for a relaxed chat

The food here is no frills pub grub and always arrives quickly and tastes good. The staff are brilliant and Stu, the landlord is so friendly and helpful and does what he can to support fellow local businesses. It's a nice atmosphere and before Stu took over we never really came here much despite living a 10 minute walk away but we pop in near enough at least once weekly now.

Went there for steak and a salad. Served along with a Latte' Good place for groups or solo dining. Give it a try. The Sunday roast is rather nice. A very good place to take visitors.. It is still an active sociable pub. Give it a try. 8/6/2024. Just had thier ; I think Best Bit. It was very nice

My local pub. Food and drinks are great and not too expensive, there is always daily specials on throughout the week. Quick service and friendly staff in a warm and friendly atmosphere. At times however, it can get rather busy and crowded so be prepared for a wait, but when the food arrives you will not be disappointed. Large carpark, play area for kids and a bar for playing pool. Just had a revamp so the place is even nicer

All pretty standard really, food ok, had New York Smothered chicken and chips, and my daughter Mac n cheese. Value for money, got the 2 for £12.49 deal so can't grumble. Portion size good for money, got 2 chicken breasts on the smothered chicken and a bit of garlic bread with Mac n cheese. Pasta was a bit firm, needed a minute or 2 more but all in all ok. Very close to where my daughter lives so will definitely go again.
