About This Pub
Ah, Brunning & Price in Chester – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper cosy pub, you know? From what I've gathered, the food is spot on; think mouthwatering lamb that melts in your mouth and those duck fat roast potatoes that are just irresistible. The staff really go the extra mile to make sure you're happy, and it's all set in this relaxed, friendly environment where you can kick back with a mate over a well-poured pint or a glass of decent wine. They're also big on sustainability, which is a nice bonus these days, and it's great that they've got options for gluten-free folks. On the flip side, I have to mention that there was a bit of a faff with vouchers not working as expected in one review, and the manager didn't step up to smooth things over, which could put a damper on things. Plus, with it closing early and not being open every day, it might not suit if you're after a lively evening out. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a relaxed meal or drink – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but just keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely delicious, with standout dishes like tender lamb that falls apart and crispy duck fat roast potatoes – it's a real treat for the taste buds.
-
The staff are brilliant and incredibly attentive, making you feel welcome and looked after from the moment you walk in.
-
It has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, perfect for catching up with friends over good conversation and a pint.
-
They offer a great selection of cask beers, affordable wines, and a solid range of malt whiskies, all at moderate prices.
-
It's dog-friendly and boasts high standards, including sustainability awards and gluten-free options, which adds a nice touch of thoughtfulness.
Cons
-
There can be issues with vouchers or promotions not being honoured as promised, which might leave you feeling a bit disappointed.
-
The manager wasn't helpful in at least one case, potentially souring an otherwise pleasant visit.
-
It tends to close early around 5 PM and might only be open five days a week, so it's not the best for late-night get-togethers.
-
With not much buzz around it, the place could feel a tad quiet compared to livelier spots, depending on when you go.

Visited here after being turned away from ego down the road as they had ran out of food on a bank holiday !!!!!.
Glad we got turned away as the Rake Hall food was delicious and staff were brilliant.
Well recommended. Lamb fell to bits and was delicious along with the duck fat roast potatoes.
I met a friend for an early evening meal at The Rake Hall, in Rake Lane, opposite Cheshire Oaks. As always at a Brunning & Price pub, standards were high. The staff were brilliant, very attentive, & the food was excellent. The Powder Room is excellent too. It's upstairs, so u may need directions. There are tables outdoors too, if u prefer fresh air.
We were there, inside, on a Friday evening & the place was packed. At a long table next to ours, a family birthday party was in full swing. And, it was clear that many others were there celebrating the beginning of the weekend. The menu is broad in selection & prices. I ordered pork steak + veg & my friend had a steak. The food was excellent. We were both delighted with the meal & the service. I can recommend Rake Hall for an evening of good food, a very pleasant ambience & excellent staff. Go & enjoy.
I was given a voucher to use at the restaurant. Staff member explained we could use it and to order as normal and the voucher will come off at the end. When we asked for the bill we were then told we couldn't use the voucher on Fridays even when we were told we could. Manager at the time didn't care and wouldn't honour the voucher. Got in contact with headoffice who promised a voucher for the money we would have saved but I have been promised this for 5 months and still waiting. Brunning and Price cares about money and not customer satisfaction. Consider when going here. Afterservice is terrible and the will mislead you with offers.
Beautiful venues with very fine ale*, food, staff and dogs are allowed, what's not to like! Such attention to detail and quality is a rarity so thank you.
