About This Pub

Ah, Brass Monkey Leith – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local haunt, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about it with others, the staff really make the place; they're dead friendly and go out of their way to accommodate groups or special events, which is brilliant if you're planning a birthday bash or just popping in for a quiz night. The drinks selection is spot on too, with a great range of beers and ales that cater to all tastes, and it's lovely to see them supporting local breweries. On the food front, it's straightforward bar grub that's pretty tasty, though it might not wow you with endless options – still, there's something for everyone, whether you're a meat lover or going plant-based. That said, it's not without its quirks; the menu's a tad small, and if you're not keen on ordering at the bar, it could feel a bit informal. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a relaxed night out in Leith – you'd be hard-pressed not to have a good time, especially with that welcoming vibe that keeps people coming back.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready for a chat or to help with events like birthdays and gatherings.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers and ales on tap, including local brews that keep things fresh and exciting.
  • The atmosphere is spot on – plenty of space inside and out, with a great vibe for catching up with mates or enjoying live music and quizzes.
  • Food options are solid, with tasty choices for meat-eaters, veggies, and vegans alike, even if it's just a simple bar menu.
  • It's well-suited for social occasions, like quiz nights or parties, making it a go-to spot for a fun evening in Edinburgh.
Cons
  • The menu is on the smaller side, so if you're after a wide variety of dishes, you might find it a bit limited.
  • Some folks have mentioned it's more of an 'order at the bar' setup, which isn't ideal if you prefer table service all evening.
  • It can get busy, especially on Sundays with the quiz, so you might have to plan ahead if you're hoping for a quiet spot.

Recent Reviews

I mean I've never been in it but Google thinks I have and annoys me to write reviews. Historically the brass monkey chain is a place where I've listened to folk music, watched local bands try their first chance, and gone to comedy gigs (as part of the free fringe). The staff have always been welcoming to me.

Have been part of two large gatherings here for a birthday and a leaving party and staff were so accommodating: reserving us basically the whole of the back area of the pub on both occasions. I personally haven’t eaten here so can’t comment but there’s good quality drink at an expected Edinburgh price. Really nice and cozy pub environment too.

We met with friends one Sunday afternoon... staff were great... really friendly. It wasn't too busy... they host a quiz night every Sunday evening. We didn't eat there as we were moving on to meet with other friends but the smell coming from the kitchen was very inviting!

Small menu, but delicious. I ordered the chili dog, Bleu cheese fries and a coke. The bartender was very friendly and she offered me a sample of a beer, and was willing to chat with me. This is an "order at the bar" type of place. And it has a good vibe. This is a place I would go back to

A cracking bar with ample space and many tables and mingling spaces and an outside area. Great selection of beers and ales on tap and wide variety of spirits and cocktails. The food here is quite good and the staff are awesome. Friendly courteous and just super nice.. the place has quite a vibe with great music and movies playing in the background. It is clean. Nice place to meet new people and also drink with friends and family.. recommended by all means.. visit and be enthralled by the ambience
