About This Pub
Ah, the Bird in the Barley – it's one of those pubs that really warms your heart when you step inside. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, they've got this knack for serving up proper homemade grub that's spot on for a relaxed meal out, whether you're tucking into a Sunday roast or opting for one of their specials. The team there seems genuinely chuffed to have you, always ready with a smile and that extra bit of care that makes a visit feel special. It's a brilliant spot for catching up with mates over a pint in the cosy bar or soaking up the sun in the beer garden. On the flip side, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few tales of waiting around a bit too long for service, probably when they're stretched thin, and some folks weren't too keen on certain dishes that didn't quite deliver, like overly hard pastries or desserts that lacked that crumble. Still, with such a strong reputation and rave reviews for the overall experience, I'd say it's well worth popping in if you're nearby, just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – homemade, traditional dishes that hit the spot, with plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options to suit all tastes.
-
Staff are wonderfully friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's great value for money, like their three-course meals that won't break the bank, especially on a Sunday.
-
The atmosphere is lovely and cosy, with a beer garden that's perfect for enjoying a drink in the sunshine.
Cons
-
Some dishes can fall a bit flat, like the pastry on pies being too tough or desserts not living up to expectations.
-
Service might drag on if they're short-staffed, leading to waits for drinks or orders.
-
It can feel a tad pricey for what you get, especially if the food doesn't quite wow you.

We recently visited on fathers day (15th June 2025). This was our first time visiting the pub and I think it is now our favourite!
Amazing attentive, friendly, polite staff. Food was served in a timely manner, hot and delicious!
Excellent food. Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Great value.
Excellent service from all the staff as always. Very friendly with just the right level of interaction without being over the top.
Lovely atmosphere.
10/10
This place has a lovely atmosphere and lots of history, and it really feels like an old and traditional pub. The service was okay, quite a lit if waiting for drinks and for our order to be taken. It felt like they were understaffed. The food was quite average, nothing special, so I was quite disappointed, unfortunately. We will not be returning.
The pastry on the meat pie was so hard couldn't even cut it , meat itself was nice. Fruit crumble was again very solid and not crumbling at all. Staff attentive and service good. Meal a bit expensive for what it was.
Went here today for the first time for a family meal for 6 people.
3 course meal for less than 17 pound on a Sunday can't go wrong.
The place was clean and tidy, there was plenty of parking and outside seating for the summer.
