About This Pub

You know, when I think about the Bee Hive Inn in South Shields, it really stands out as a solid spot for a relaxed get-together. They've got this brilliant selection of drinks, like their bourbon range that's perfect if you're in the mood for something special, and the staff are always so approachable and efficient – it's like chatting with old mates behind the bar. The food is another highlight; I had the lamb once, and it was cooked to perfection with a sauce that's still stuck in my memory, while the fish and chips portions are generous and full of flavour. Oh, and if you're popping in with your dog, they've got thoughtful extras like blankets and treats, which just adds to the homely vibe. On the flip side, it's a bit tucked away, so you might have to wander a short distance from the town centre, and it can be pretty quiet, which isn't ideal if you're after a bit more energy in the air. Prices are fair but not the cheapest, and with fewer recent chats online, it feels like it might be flying under the radar lately. All in all, it's a great choice for a laid-back evening, but worth weighing up if you're after something more central or buzzing.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Fantastic selection of drinks, especially their great range of bourbon that makes it a top pick for whisky lovers.
  • Friendly and helpful staff who always deliver spot-on service, making you feel right at home.
  • Delicious food on offer, like perfectly cooked lamb and massive portions of fish and chips that really hit the spot.
  • It's wonderfully dog-friendly, with blankets and treats available, which is a lovely touch for anyone bringing their furry friend.
  • A quiet and relaxed atmosphere, ideal for enjoying a peaceful pint without the crowds.
Cons
  • It's a bit out of the way, tucked off the main town centre, so you might need to make a short walk to get there.
  • Prices are moderate, and while some drinks are cheaper than nearby spots, it could feel a tad pricey depending on what you're after.
  • It doesn't always buzz with activity, which means it can be quite quiet at times, especially if you're hoping for a lively vibe.
  • Not many recent reviews floating about, so it might not be the first place that springs to mind for a night out these days.

Only popped in for drinks. It's our go to bar in South Shields for bourbon as they have a good selection. Service as always was spot on.

First time in for 100 yrs ( feels like ) Early afternoon, so quiet. £3.90 for a pint of Madri. Nice pint. And cheaper than Steamboat at £5.10. :-( Aug 2023

This is a fantastic pub. The food was amazing and the staff were really helpful and friendly. I had the lamb (pictured) which was cooked to perfection with one of the best sauces I've ever tasted. My wife had the fish and chips which was huge and again tasted amazing and was cooked perfectly. We had a quick look in the secret garden which would be amazing on a hot summers day.

A little out of town but worth the walk, nice clean friendly pub with one added bonus dog friendly the even had blankets and treats available. Good selection of bottled and draught alcoholic beverages staff very friendly and accommodating wasn’t very busy when we visited which is a shame. Give is a go you won’t be disappointed.

I've passed this pub thousands of times but had never crossed the threshold. Made a point of going today. Slightly away from the town centre towards the river, if your on the road following the river towards the beach, you'll pass it without realising. Well worth a visit if you'd like a quiet pint through the day. Large bar area with a pool table at one end.
