About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about the Axe & Square – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Countesthorpe, Leicester. I've got to say, the food really stands out; it's fresh, hearty, and offers brilliant value, whether you're tucking into a Sunday roast or trying one of their midweek deals. The staff are an absolute delight, always ready with a kind word or even going the extra mile, like sorting out a bike mishap for a group of mates. And the atmosphere? It's spot on – imagine snuggling up by a log burner in winter or soaking up the sun in their lovely garden come summer. It's family-friendly too, which is great if you're out with the little ones. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect; I've seen a few mentions of food not being quite right, like cold plates that make your meal lose its warmth or the odd overcooked lamb or undercooked veg, especially when the place is buzzing. Still, with such high praise overall, I'd say it's well worth a visit – just maybe book ahead and go on a quieter day to avoid any hitches. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening out, and I reckon you'll leave with a smile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is fresh, delicious, and always plentiful, with great value for money – perfect for a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and go above and beyond, like helping out in an emergency or providing top-notch service with a smile.
  • It's got a lovely atmosphere with cosy corners, a log burner for those chilly evenings, and a beautiful garden and terrace for sunny days.
  • They source some ingredients locally, which adds a nice touch of authenticity and supports the community.
  • A welcoming spot for families, with options for kids and special menus that make it easy to enjoy a meal together.
Cons
  • Occasionally, there are issues with food temperature or cooking, like cold plates making everything go lukewarm or some dishes being overdone or undercooked.
  • It can get really busy at times, which might lead to a few slip-ups in service or food quality, especially during peak hours.
  • From what I've heard, the Yorkshire puddings aren't always up to scratch – sometimes they're flat or burnt, which is a shame for a traditional pub grub.

A few issues with the food, the plates were cold which meant the food got cold especially the green beans, the roast lamb was too well done and broccoli was barely cooked, the Yorkshire puddings were flat and burnt. The gravy and roast potatoes were outstanding, a pity but it was very busy and we may have been unlucky but the pub is so nice we will try the food again.

My friend had fallen off his bike as we were on the way to this pub for an evening meal. The staff were very kind in trying to help bandage him up before the manager went out her way to open the back gate so we could put our bikes safe and eat inside so we didn't have to eat out in the cold. We were a bit dirty and one of us was a bit bloody but the manager made us feel extremely welcome and we had a nice pub meal in the nice bar area. We'll be back.

We arrived and was seated by one of the waitresses named Rose….a very smart presented young lady with fantastic skills in her service. The food was amazing and delicious. I would highly recommend a visit to the Axe & Square.

Booked lunch for 6 for the MIL's birthday on a recommendation and it didn't disappoint. Pleasantly greeted and seated quickly. The Menu selection looked good with many tempting options. We ordered various starters and mains, as well as drinks. The drinks arrived quickly as did the starters. The mains were brought to us shortly after we finished our first course. The food was delicious, I do our cooking at home and we don't often go out as I hate paying for food that is sub par to my own and I have to say Axe & Square hit the mark, I would happily eat there over and over again. It was so good we went back the week later for my own birthday lunch, again we were well looked after and the food was first rate. My faves; Tex Mex Chicken Strips Starter and the Gochujang Chicken Loaded Naan. Highly recommended.
