About This Pub

Ah, the Wheldale Hotel – it's one of those places that really grows on you with its genuine, welcoming vibe, perfect for a relaxed night out or a quick stayover. I have to say, the staff are just brilliant; they go out of their way to make you feel at ease, like you're chatting with old mates over a pint. The rooms are clean as a whistle and surprisingly well-equipped for the price, with things like Sky TV and free Wi-Fi making it feel a bit more luxurious than your average budget spot. And the food? Oh, it's a winner – those pub meals and breakfasts are hearty, flavoursome, and come with portions that leave you satisfied without any hidden costs. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; a few folks have mentioned rooms that are on the snug side, which might not suit everyone, and there was that one story about a booking mix-up that could throw a spanner in the works. Plus, if you're hopping on public transport, the buses are few and far between, stopping early in the evening, so it's probably best if you're driving or nearby. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone after good value and a friendly atmosphere in Castleford – just keep those little drawbacks in mind for a smoother visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and make you feel right at home with their warm Yorkshire welcome.
  • Rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable, with handy extras like Sky TV, free Wi-Fi, and a light breakfast included – it's all about that great value.
  • The food is a real highlight; pub meals and breakfast options are generous, tasty, and won't break the bank.
  • Free parking and little touches like tea, coffee, and toiletries in the room add up to a hassle-free stay.
Cons
  • Some rooms can feel a tad small, which might cramp your style if you're after more space.
  • There have been a few booking glitches reported, so it's worth double-checking details to avoid any mix-ups.
  • Public transport options are limited – buses are only hourly and stop early, which could be a pain if you're relying on them.
  • If you've got mobility challenges, the location or setup might not be the most straightforward.

This is a nice pub with friendly attentive people running it I stayed in a single room which although small was clean, nicely decorated and a really comfortable bed. There is a bus stop outside, the buses are once per hour and stop at about 5.30pm. If you have walking difficulties you may find the outside steps that go up to the rooms difficult but they may have accessible rooms I didn't ask. The pub closed early in the evening about 8pm whilst I was there. Like a lot of pubs it's not worth staying open late in the present economic climate. Breakfast was fine with plenty of variety and I believe the other meals available are very good. The area is a bit run down with some redevelopment taking place. The council are obviously strapped for cash as the general appearance of the area and town are not helped by the lack of maintenance. The business is opposite the Tigers stadium and I would imagine the fans are a good source of income. If you overlook the area staying here is exceptional value and ideal for a short stop over. I will use them again when in the area.

Looks are deceiving. What a pleasant surprise, Donna the owner gave us a warm welcome and thorough detail of how everything worked, from the TV to details regarding dinner and breakfast. We dined in and had one of, if not the best pub meal ever, value quantity and quality.

I originally intended to reserve accommodations at this hotel for March 12, 2025. However, during the online reservation process on Booking.com, the transaction unexpectedly altered to March 19, with a checkout date of March 20. As an individual who has managed a pub hotel for over 35 years, I have encountered numerous complaints associated with Booking.com. Guests would frequently arrive with their reservation confirmations, only for us to find that no record of their bookings existed in our system. In earlier times, reaching out to Booking.com to address such concerns was feasible; unfortunately, it has now become nearly impossible. They no longer provide a contact number or any sort of customer service, likely due to the overwhelming volume of complaints they receive. Booking.com was once regarded as a reliable platform for hotel reservations; however, its service quality has significantly deteriorated. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend avoiding Booking.com for your travel arrangements. Upon my arrival at the Wheldale, I was confronted with a troubling situation: a visibly intoxicated individual was outside the pub, aggressively breaking glasses. Subsequently, he entered the establishment, where what appeared to be the manager who still had her coat on behind the bar requested that he vacate the premises. This initiated an ongoing dispute, resulting in a chaotic and unwelcoming atmosphere. When I inquired about the readiness of my reservation, I was informed that it had been erroneously booked for March 19, 2025. Given the unsettling environment and the overall unpleasant atmosphere, I chose to leave immediately and instead spent the night in my car, which, frankly, from my little time I spent in the pub I think it proved to be a more satisfactory alternative than staying at the hotel. I called the hotel to request a refund, but my request was declined due to the non-refundable nature of my booking. While I understand the establishment's policy, I thought it prudent to make the attempt. In hindsight, this experience has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The overall condition of the premises was shocking—both the exterior and interior were dirty and poorly maintained, and the general ambiance was far from inviting. Even had I made a reservation for the correct date, I doubt I would have chosen to remain at this establishment. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to take any photos, as my departure was very desperately rushed. In light of my experiences, I would strongly advise against considering a stay at this hotel, even if offered at no charge.
