About This Pub

Oh, what a gem Vines Brasserie is, tucked away in the elegant Barton Hall Hotel – it's got that classic country house charm that makes you feel like you're stepping into a bygone era. From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, the food really shines through; imagine tucking into a perfectly done steak and ale pudding or an afternoon tea that's just packed with tasty treats and generous helpings – it's no wonder people rave about it for special dos like Christmas lunches. The service is another highlight, with staff who are genuinely attentive and make you feel right at home, which is just what you want after a long day. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – it can sting a bit on the wallet, and if you're hoping for something more lively, the atmosphere might feel a tad underwhelming or even a bit ordinary on quieter nights. Still, if you're up for a relaxed, sophisticated outing in the Northamptonshire countryside, it's worth a visit, especially for those milestone moments, just keep in mind it might not suit every budget or taste.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, with standout dishes like the steak and ale pudding and a fabulous Christmas lunch that really hits the spot.
  • Service is top-notch and really attentive, making you feel welcome and looked after from the moment you arrive.
  • It's set in a beautiful, historic country house with lovely grounds, perfect for a special occasion or just a relaxing getaway.
  • They do a cracking afternoon tea with generous portions and beautifully decorated cakes – ideal for a treat with friends.
Cons
  • It can be quite pricey, which might not always feel justified if the food doesn't quite live up to the hype.
  • The atmosphere might come across as a bit bland or forgettable at times, especially if you're expecting something more vibrant.
  • Some experiences can vary depending on what's going on, like if there's a wedding, which might affect the overall vibe.

Unfortunately we chose to dine out when there was a Wedding on, but the food was very good, service delightful and we will probably go again

Absolutely outstanding Christmas Day lunch. Superb service, wonderful atmosphere and the food was amazing which can be very difficult for a traditional Christmas lunch. Maybe the best we've ever had. outstanding all around.

Quite pricy for mediocre food and an almost bland, forgettable atmosphere. Billed as one of the better quality and certainly pricier restaurants in the area it should offer standout service and food, unfortunately neither were on offer. We ordered the chicken and prosciutto balottene, smoked pork strips with a side of fries. For dessert the Pina Colada posset and triple ice cream. A nice selection but everything was just a bit off. The chicken was overcooked and a little dry requiring a heavy coating of jus to be enjoyable. The fries had an overused oil taste... either the oil needed refreshing or the fryer wasn't hot enough. And the posset was more mousse and the shortbread was inedible leaving a rancid aftertaste. (One of the diners is a professional baker and she was far from impressed by this!) The pork strips were nice but not great, the same with the ice cream. All of this was raised with the waiting staff who seemed somewhat disinterested. The decor of the restaurant is ultimately forgettable and almost feels like a cheap knock-off of a chain restaurant. There's a few nice touches, the white gloves used when delivering food to the table is great (not seen since Silver Service training many moons ago), but its offset by the cheaply laminated drinks menus. It obviously wants to be a high class restaurant but unfortunately it stumbles in its execution.

Have eaten here a few times over the years, always a good experience. Staff are attentive, and the food very nice. Recommend the steak and ale pudding - puff pastry crust was perfect.

Afternoon Tea was lovely ❤️. The sandwiches had good sized sliced bread and filling. The cakes were beautifully decorated and very yummy. The Scones were a great size and we had two each! Service was lovely and attentive. Great time had by 6 of us and we look forward to coming back!
