About This Pub

Ah, The White Lion – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper hidden spot in the Cheshire countryside, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the home-cooked grub; whether it's the steak on a Monday night or that unbeatable Sunday lunch deal, it's clear they do comfort food really well, leaving you satisfied and smiling. The team there seems top-notch too, always on hand with a friendly chat and quick service, which makes the whole experience feel welcoming and unpretentious. That traditional vibe with the beamed ceilings and roaring fires is just spot on for a cosy night, and the beer garden sounds ideal for sunnier days. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect – if you're a minute late for your table, it might put a dampener on things, as one person felt a bit brushed off, and while the food's solid, it doesn't always knock your socks off, so expectations should be set accordingly. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone after a good pint and a bite without the fuss, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just plan ahead and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is spot on – think hearty home-cooked classics like steak, fish and chips, and pies that really hit the spot, especially with those tempting deals like Sunday lunch for just £15.
  • The staff are so welcoming and attentive; they make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, which is just lovely for a relaxed evening.
  • It's got that classic country pub charm with wooden beams, open fires, and a cosy snug – perfect for chilling out on a winter evening or enjoying the beer garden in summer.
  • A great selection of drinks, including award-winning cask ales and special nights like Steak Monday or Curry Tuesday, adds real variety and fun to the visit.
Cons
  • If you're running a bit late for your booking, you might not get the warmest reception, as one experience showed it can feel a tad unwelcoming.
  • The food is generally good but not always mind-blowing – some folks found it just okay, so it might not stand out as exceptional every time.

First time here. Visited on a Monday night for food. Pub was busy which was a good sign. We were warmly welcomed. Shown to a table and drinks brought to us. Had the steak which was excellent. Staff very attentive and we were looked after very well. Wished we lived nearer as pubs like this are few and far between.

We visited today for lunch. My partner had the lambs liver dinner and he is still talking about it, he said it was delicious, the rest of our party had the Black Pudding and the Stilton and Mushroom, they were starters but we had them as main meals and they were also excellent and we will certainly be going back. Our compliments to the chef.

We had a table for 6 booked for a Saturday night, four of us managed to get there on time, but 2 where about 8 min late. Made to feel about as welcome as a fart in a lift. When it came to ordering food and drinks, that was done efficiently. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. When we came to pay, was waiting at the bar for 5 minutes whilst staff were having a natter. When staff came to the bar, the 6 of us were waiting and two more people had just come in and joined the queue. The member of staff exclaimed "where did everyone come from"? The 8 of us waiting had filled the bar area! I was asked if we were paying separately, to which I said I was paying for 2 of us, I was told we should have informed them that we were paying separately in advance. People should come here dressed in school uniform. You'll get a school meal standard and spoken to like a child. If you want a warm welcome and decent food, go elsewhere....we will next time.

Lovely local pub serving great food. We were staying at a near by cheap hotel but didn't fancy their food offering. The white lion is about 5 minutes walk and 100% worth it. My fish and chips were very nice, my sons smothered chicken was lovely but the steak and ale pie my wife had was the star of the evening... The gravy was first rate. Deserts are limited in choice but each were also excellent. Great friendly staff and service. If we're staying in the area again we'll definitely be back to try more dishes.
