About This Pub

Ah, The Wandering Duck – it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper morning or lunchtime treat. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is spot on; that full English is a real winner, and the coffee's spot on too, leaving you feeling well chuffed. The staff are brilliant, always up for a chat and happy to tweak orders to suit, which makes the whole experience feel personal and welcoming. It's got this lovely, lively vibe with tables full of folks enjoying themselves, perfect for a casual catch-up with mates. On the flip side, it does get packed, so you might end up queuing or waiting a bit for your grub, and I've heard a couple of tales about tea not being as hot as it should be – nothing major, but it's worth noting if you're particular about that. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after a relaxed, affordable bite in Darlington, but maybe plan ahead for those busier days to avoid any frustrations.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious – think top-notch full English breakfasts and smashed avocado that's hard to beat.
  • Friendly and accommodating staff who go out of their way to handle special requests and make you feel welcome.
  • A lovely, buzzing atmosphere with plenty of chatter and happy vibes, making it a great spot for a relaxed brunch.
  • Reasonably priced for the quality, offering good value without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy at times, which might mean a bit of a wait for your order or a table.
  • Occasionally, drinks like tea aren't served piping hot, which is a small niggle but noticeable.
  • The hours are a tad limited, typically wrapping up by early afternoon, so it's not ideal for evening outings.

Went in on a Saturday morning for bacon sandwich and a cup of tea. Not the most complicated order in the world and, since I was seated straight away, it was not that busy either. Tea arrived quickly, but was certainly not the hottest it could have been. The bacon sandwich arrived a good fifteen minutes later, but was not in the bread that I had asked for.

Great choice of food and drinks available. All the staff are friendly and accommodate each persons special requests regarding the food. I can't fault their Smashed avocado on sourdough with poached egg. It's definitely the best around. The only issue I have found is that sometimes it can be so busy, and you can't get a table. It's definitely worth a visit, and I think you will go back again and again just like us.😁👍
