About This Pub

Ah, The Split Chimp Ale House – it's one of those hidden gems down by Spanish City Plaza that I've heard so many good things about from mates who've popped in. From what I've gathered, it's all about that top-notch selection of British beers and ciders on tap, with options that cater to all tastes, whether you're after something light and fruity or a proper hearty bitter. The atmosphere is just lovely; it's quirky with great tunes playing in the background, and sitting outside with a pint while watching the waves and the sunset sounds like pure bliss on a summer evening. Plus, it's really welcoming for dogs, which is always a plus if you're out for a walk along the coast. On the flip side, though, there have been a couple of off moments with service – some folks mentioned getting their orders wrong and feeling a bit brushed off, which is a shame because it could put a dampener on an otherwise great night. Overall, it's got that solid 4.5 rating for a reason, so I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just keep in mind it might be more about the drinks than a full meal, and pop in after lunchtime to catch those opening hours. It's a balanced spot with more highs than lows, making it a solid choice for a casual get-together with friends.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of cask ales and ciders that really hit the mark for any ale enthusiast.
  • It's got a lovely, quirky atmosphere with great music and that feel-good vibe, making it a proper cosy spot to unwind.
  • Outdoor seating is a winner, especially with those stunning views of the beach and sunsets – perfect for a relaxed evening.
  • They're super dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out with your furry friend, adding to the welcoming feel of the place.
  • Service is generally smiley and helpful, based on what most folks are saying, which makes for a pleasant visit overall.
Cons
  • There have been a few grumbles about inconsistent service, like orders getting mixed up and some staff coming across as a bit rude or unhelpful.
  • It might not suit everyone if you're after a more formal or extensive food menu, as it seems to focus mainly on drinks.
  • Opening hours are a tad limited, typically starting around 2pm, so it's not ideal if you're looking for a spot for lunch or a morning pint.

It’s a nice bar the young girl tonight was a bit useless and rude. When she got the order wrong it was as if it was our fault. Then when I asked if we could get a bowl of water for the dog we were told there’s a tap over there! Quite rudely so found the dog bowls and used the staff sink to get said drink then was asked to move out of the way. Just really rude and needs some education in hospitality! The rest of the staff were very nice.

Excellent dog to person ratio. Five stars. Didn’t actually try the food. Beer is good. But it doesn’t matter. I’m here for the dogs.

I first discovered this place when it first opened a year or so ago when the owner recommend it & I'm pleased to say a year later it's still a fabulous little bar. This is the sister bar of their first (same name) in Newcastle city centre (underneath the railway arches) & whilst smaller, has adopted the same philosophy. Up to 5 cask & 6 craft keg ales on tap at any one time. I'm a visitor here but I can only say I wish my town had places like this. For its size it has a good selection of both beers & spirits alike. It has an enviable location in the Spanish City building adjacent the memorial on the sea front promenade. I can only imagine what a great spot this is in the sunnier warmer months. If you haven't been here before I highly recommend it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
