About This Pub

Ah, The Shakespeare—it's one of those classic Birmingham pubs that you can't help but warm to, especially if you're fond of that old-school British vibe with its Victorian tiles and historic nooks that make you feel right at home. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are an absolute delight, always on hand with friendly chats and speedy service, which really elevates the experience when you're tucking into a hearty burger or savouring a well-poured cask ale. It's brilliantly placed just by the station, perfect for nipping in after a journey for a quick bite or drink without any fuss. On the flip side, though, there are a few things that might give you pause—some visitors have mentioned getting pestered by beggars outside, which can spoil the atmosphere a bit, and the place does seem like it could use a bit of TLC to spruce it up and keep everything shipshape. Overall, it's got that solid 4.2 rating going for it, so if you're up for a mix of the good and the not-so-good, it's worth a visit for a relaxed catch-up with mates, just keep an eye out for those minor drawbacks.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm with all those lovely old features and Victorian tiles really makes you feel like you're stepping back in time—it's a proper treat for anyone who appreciates a bit of character in their local.
  • The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and quick service, which makes popping in for a drink or a bite feel welcoming and hassle-free.
  • It's spot on for food and drinks—the classic British pub grub like burgers and cask ales come highly recommended, and they pour a perfect pint that hits the spot after a long day.
  • Being right next to Birmingham New Street station, it's incredibly handy for a quick stop-off, whether you're a local or just passing through, making it ideal for a swift refreshment.
Cons
  • There have been some reports of beggars hanging around and causing a bit of bother, which can put a damper on what should be a relaxing visit.
  • The place could do with a freshen-up; some folks mention it feels a tad worn out and in need of an overhaul to keep up with its historic appeal.
  • Prices might be a smidge higher than nearby spots, so if you're watching the pennies, you might find better value just around the corner.

This is a very handy place. We like a drink after our journey from S Wales. I love all of the old features and victorian tiles. This time was moderately busy, but no long wait fir service and staff are very friendly and helpful. I am certain to be back. 👍🏻

Better and slightly cheaper than the other Nicholsons around corner, Bacchus Bar. (£5.90 2 halfs)

If you want to visit an establishment with welcoming knowledgeable staff and a great atmosphere do not visit this place. However if you fancy drinks with friends and being constantly harassed by beggars then this is the place for you. Could do with a complete overhaul. In particular the ridiculous ladies and men's toilets which are horrendously unlean with flies everywhere. Unfortunately this is the worse pub in the Nicholson's group. Awful. Will never revisit and would never recommend. Do not order the food unless you like bland frozen fare akin to anything from Iceland! There is better within a two minute walk.

After a busy day travelling, called into The Shakespeare for some dinner. I had the Classic Cheese & Bacon burger and a pint of cask ale. The food was delicious and really hit the spot. The beer was perfect. The service was friendly, efficient and professional. The pub was busy. Highly recommended.

The Shakespeare is a great spot for locals and visitors! The staff are friendly and service is fast. With it being directly next to Birmingham New Street station it is perfect for a quick drink or snack. As we came for a quick drop off I grabbed a nice pint of Amstel and also some bar snacks. We ordered the Ham & Cheese Toastie and chicken bites which was absolutely amazing! They have lots to choose from and the quality of food is great! Highly recommended
