About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Standard – it's one of those classic pubs in Leicester that you hear about and think, 'That sounds like a proper spot for a pint.' From what I've gathered from the chatter online, it's got this really welcoming feel, thanks to the landlady and her team who go out of their way to make you comfortable. You'll find a good range of beers at prices that won't sting too much, and it's spot on for things like watching the rugby or catching up with friends over a few drinks. That said, it's not all smooth sailing; some evenings can turn a bit noisy with families and little ones about, which might spoil the mood if you're after a peaceful chat. There are also a few niggles with service here and there, like not every staff member hitting the mark, but overall, it's a place that seems to win people over with its charm. If you're heading out for a relaxed night, it's worth checking out, just maybe pick your time wisely to avoid the busier moments – you know, keep an eye on when it's likely to be calmer.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The landlady and her team are incredibly welcoming and make you feel right at home, which really adds to the cosy atmosphere.
-
They've got a solid selection of beers at great prices, perfect for a casual catch-up without breaking the bank.
-
It's a brilliant spot for watching sports or gathering with mates, as they've been known to put on events like the Six Nations with the sound up.
-
The service is generally spot-on, with staff going the extra mile to ensure everyone has a good time.
Cons
-
It can get a bit chaotic with families and kids around, turning a quiet evening into something more lively than you'd hoped.
-
There are occasional slips in service, where not everyone on the team seems as polished, which might leave you wanting a bit more consistency.
-
Some folks have mentioned practical issues, like the glass collector needing better tools, which could make the overall experience feel a tad under-resourced.

I visited this pub on thursday early evening as we were going to the theatre so popped in for a quiet drink on the way what a mistake I won't be returning to start it was ok and we ordered drinks and managed to sit down but 5 minutes in to our visit it filled with children and their children screaming shouting running in and out, people were having a cigarette but when they came back in they stunk of weed. It isn't what you expect from a city centre
Great pub for away fans. Land lady is very hospitable and inviting. Good selection of beers and locals all friendly too
Top pub, went there last weekend for a mates party, the staff were brilliant and the service was spot on.
Lovely friendly pub. Great priced pints. Lovely land lady put the Six Nations on for us. With sound. Thank you.
The only people in this establishment who really care about their jobs and show any levels of professionalism are the landlady's polite and kind daughter and the hard working glass collector chap, (he would benefit from a glass basket, so that he can do his job properly. Why would you make him carry around dirty glasses squashed against his chest)? The landlady is more concerned about getting blind drunk "whilst so called working" and disgracefully flirting with her male bar staff, rather than paying attention and serving her customers. It was embarrassing and sickening to witness. She would even stoop as low to even drink from your glass whilst serving you. She clearly has little, almost, no respect towards her paying customers. The toilets were an upmost discrace, filthy and uncleaned. A total unhygienic, disgraceful and disgusting place to visit. I would NOT recommend going there unless you want to be repulsed and served in such an unprofessional way and expect to be insulted as the landlady walks around the bar screaming and disrespecting her customers. These standards are why the hospitality industry is suffering and on a serious decline. A very disappointing and unpleasant experience.
