About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Oak – or The Polly, as the locals call it – is one of those pubs that just feels like a proper community hub in Bexleyheath, with its rich history dating back to the 1800s. I love how they've kept that rustic charm while making it a modern spot for everything from a quiet pint in the garden to lively nights with live music or catching the footie on Sky Sports. The staff are an absolute gem, always cheerful and on point with service, and it's clear they take pride in their drink selection, from cracking guest ales to a well-poured Guinness that's got people raving. Plus, the outdoor spaces and event halls are ideal for get-togethers, whether it's a casual meet-up or something more organised. On the downside, though, you might find the beer options a bit narrow if you're set on certain brews, and the costs can mount up faster than you'd expect – that £10 for a few drinks and snacks might make you think twice on a regular basis. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good night out, but it's worth popping in with a budget in mind to keep things enjoyable without any surprises.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historical charm is absolutely delightful – it's got that warm, old-school feel from its 1800s roots as a blacksmith's shop, making every visit feel a bit special.
-
The staff and owners are really friendly and provide excellent service, always up for a chat and making you feel right at home.
-
They've got a lovely garden and event spaces, perfect for a relaxed afternoon or hosting gatherings like parties, with live music, sports on the telly, and even darts to keep things lively.
-
The drink selection is spot on, with a great range of beers including guest ales, stouts like their much-praised Guinness, and options for spirits and wines to suit all tastes.
Cons
-
The beer choices can be a bit limited at times, like not having bitter on offer, which might disappoint if you're after something specific.
-
Prices for drinks and snacks seem a tad steep – for example, a couple of halves and some nibbles can add up quickly, which might catch you off guard.

Really nice little hall and garden and excellent service front the staff and owners
Great old stool boozer, they have a venue for hire out back which is excellent for parties with very generous grounds around it.
This pub is only round the corner from where I live, I've lived in this area for over 12 years, but this was the first time I've used this pub. Firstly when I walked in there was only 4 other people, I walked to the bar and asked for a pint of bitter, " we don't sell bitter" was the reply, oh "a pint of Guinness then please" "£5.60 please" was the reply. I haven't been in there since but they now have a notice outside saying Under New Management let's hope their prices have changed as well 🤔
The pub was the haunt of local celebrity (at The Red House) William Morris, great to see it still has a historical interior and exterior. Landlord very friendly.
Seemed nice enough , but for 2 x 1/2 lagers, 1 packet of Crisps & some Peanuts, £10.35 seemed excessive. When did it start to cost £1.50 for a packet of Crisps & over £2 for a small pot of Peanuts. Wasn't impressed
