About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Royal Oak – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in Cogenhoe with its charming history dating back to the 1800s. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; people rave about the Sunday lunches and that fish and chips that's apparently unbeatable, all served up in a cosy, rustic setting that's perfect for a catch-up or even a family do. The team there seems dead helpful too, always accommodating like when they sorted a smaller portion for someone's elderly relative or managed a massive table without a hitch – it's those little touches that make it stand out. On the flip side, it's not all roses; a few mentions of the steak not being up to snuff, a bit fatty for the price, so you might want to steer clear if that's your go-to. Plus, with it being closed on Mondays and varying hours, it's handy to plan around that. All in all, with a solid 4.7 rating from heaps of happy visitors, I'd say it's well worth a punt if you're in the area – just go with an open mind and you'll likely have a top-notch time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious Sunday roasts and the best fish and chips you've had in ages, all home-cooked and full of flavour.
  • The staff are so friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make you feel welcome, whether it's sorting a smaller meal or handling a big group with ease.
  • It's got that lovely homely atmosphere with a rich history, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed meal or catching up with mates over events like vintage afternoon tea.
  • Great value for money, especially for family celebrations or a quick bite after a walk, and they've got a good selection of beers and drinks to boot.
Cons
  • Some dishes might not quite hit the mark, like the steak being a bit fatty, which could leave you wishing for better quality at the price.
  • The hours can be a bit tricky, with the pub closed on Mondays and limited food options on certain days, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning a visit.

Took my elderly mother here for lunch. She doesn’t have a large appetite and staff were so accommodating. A smaller meal was offered and she really enjoyed her lunch ( fish and chips). Must say the chips were the best I’d had for a long time. First time here but definitely not the last.

We booked a large table here for Sunday lunch and a family celebration. From start to finish it was five stars. Friendly staff, delicious food, served promptly and hot(which can be hard with a table of over 20ppl). Very good value for money. Not one moan from a big group, we all said we will be back. The kitchen met all of our dietary requirements, without a fuss. Thank you. 🙏

A really lovely venue, a very great menu with some really interesting dishes. A good selection of beer and other drinks, was warm and welcoming. Would have been 4 stars however for the price the food could have been a little better, mainly the steak was a bit fatty and when pointed out to the staff they were barely apologetic, and more had a 'oh well' attitude. Would go back and give it another go.
