About This Pub
Ah, The Riverside – it's one of those unassuming spots in South Shields that can really make for a pleasant afternoon or evening out. From what I've gathered from the chatter, the staff are an absolute delight, always cheerful and quick to sort you out, even if it's busy. The food often steals the show when it's good, with hearty options like roasts and specials coming out piping hot and nicely presented, paired with a great choice of drinks to wash it all down. And let's not forget the buzzing atmosphere; it's got that warm, lively energy with live music and sports on the screens, making it ideal for a relaxed get-together. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – there are tales of the kitchen running out of things or dishing up meals that don't quite hit the mark, and some waits can drag on a bit, which might leave you a tad frustrated. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after a friendly pub experience, but it'd be wise to keep expectations in check for those off days; still, the positives generally outweigh the niggles, so I'd say give it a go if you're nearby.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are super friendly and welcoming, always managing to find a table even when things are buzzing.
-
When the food's on point, it's an absolute treat – think piping hot dishes, well-presented meals, and a solid selection of options like roasts and specials.
-
The atmosphere is spot on for a good time, with live bands, Sky Sports for the footie, and a cosy vibe that makes it perfect for catching up with mates over a pint.
Cons
-
Food can be hit or miss; some folks have had disappointing experiences, like running out of key ingredients or ending up with subpar meals.
-
There might be a bit of a wait for your grub, and occasionally things like starters and mains turning up all at once can throw off the experience.
-
It's a shame about the occasional slip-ups in service or quality, which can leave you wanting a bit more consistency.

The food here is terrible, went in for lunch at 12.30 tried to order the chicken and stuffing scottie but they had run out of stuffing. I settled for the beef scottie, My wife ordered the chicken tikka flat bread and some nachos to start. Starter and mains came at the same time, the Nachos were soft and the salsa was like tomato ketchup. My wife's flat wasn't cooked properly the doe was raw in the middle, my chips were burnt and tasted of burnt oil. Staff were nice enough and apologised for the chef. Used to go every Sunday for lunch before it changed owners. Won't be going back.
We had not booked but the staff were super friendly and although they were busy managed to find us a table for two.
I had the roast beef and my husband had the special of savoury mince and dumplings.
Everything came nicely presented and piping hot, good selection of vegetables and home made Yorkshire pudding.
We finished with homemade sticky toffee pudding served with clotted cream and a rich toffee sauce.
Not posh but well cooked fresh food , I would definitely visit again.
Food wait for Sunday lunch was 40-50 minutes, but was piping hot and beautiful once served. I went for the chef's mixed meat special and it did not disappoint.
Got some time off from work.. lovely lunch on Monday with my friend. Been again today with my younger sisters and my niece.. lovely food great service. Thank you I may even bring the hubby along this week.. 3 times in a week... watch this space 🙂
Really nice place good atmosphere. Staff are very friendly polite and professional. Very popular Good choice of drinks and although I didn't have food it look lovely. Has sky sports so ideal if you fancy a pint taking in a game. There was a live band on which were excellent. Couldn't fault this place, very clean throughout and staff working very hard cleaning tables and serving customers. I'll definitely go back and would highly recommend this place.
