About This Pub
Ah, Alum Ale House – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in South Shields, tucked away by the ferry with stunning river views that make every visit a treat. I love how they've got this brilliant range of real ales on tap, from classic brews to some interesting guests, and the staff are always up for a chat, serving up pints with a smile and even sharing tips on what's best on offer. The atmosphere is spot-on too – all cosy and inviting, with a fireplace for chillier days and that outdoor decking that's just made for soaking up the sun with a cold one in hand. On the flip side, it's not the place to go if you're starving, as the focus is firmly on drinks rather than a full menu, and it can get a tad busy at peak times, which might put you off if you're after a quiet corner. All in all, it's a brilliant spot for ale lovers and anyone wanting a laid-back escape, but do plan around the opening hours and maybe grab some grub beforehand to make the most of it.

Great local near the ferry landing in South Shields. Good range of decent beers, friendly service. Nice atmosphere. The cleverest/funniest thing is the CCTV screen above the bar which is trained on the ferry landing, so you can see when you need to polish your pint off and run for it! There are some tables outside if it's sunny.
Absolutely beautiful place with lovely choice of refreshments. Staff are lovely and on a sunny day is nothing short of picturesque. Highly recommended 👌
One of the pioneers of real ale in South Shields. Fifty years ago the town had about 5 pubs selling cask beer, in the North East beer desert. Totally changed now. Paulicarus is making his first visit here. The pub is next to the ferry across the river Tyne to North Shields. A river that used to build the best ships in the world. Up to eight real ales. Had a Hadrian border Tyneside Blond, 3.9%. Then a Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold 4.2%. Both excellent. Good size beer patio for when it is not freezing outside. ( A rare event!)
Located beside the ferry with fantastic outdoor seating area with a very thoughtful completely separate smoking area
Great selection of drinks, perfect for sundownersbon balmy summer evenings 👌
Bar + side room + outside seating/ front/ side and rear. Some tables have gas fire pits . 9 h/ pulls beer in very good condition. Staff and service excellent.
