About This Pub
Ah, The Priory – it's one of those local spots in Tynemouth that you hear about and think, 'Why not give it a go?' From what I've gathered, it's got this lovely warm vibe that really shines on a dreary day, perfect for settling in with a pint or trying out their famed mai tais, which sound like a real treat and won't cost you an arm and a leg. I reckon it's great for casual get-togethers, with the pub being open late most nights, so you can linger as long as you like. But honestly, it's not all smooth sailing; some folks have had a tough time with the food, like ending up with a snotty egg or tomatoes that make the toast a soggy mess, and that's a shame when you're hoping for a proper meal. Service can be hit or miss too – one minute you're chatting with a cheerful barman, the next you're waiting forever for your order or dealing with staff who seem a bit off their game. Still, with a decent 4.0 rating overall, it's worth popping by if you're in the area, just maybe stick to the drinks and keep expectations in check for the rest. All in all, it's a classic pub with heart, but it'd be even better with a bit more consistency.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot to escape the cold and enjoy a cosy evening with friends.
-
They serve some cracking drinks, like the mai tais that customers absolutely rave about, and they're reasonably priced too.
-
It's open seven days a week with flexible hours, ideal for a spontaneous catch-up or a relaxed night out.
-
The overall vibe feels welcoming, with friendly staff on their good days, creating that classic pub charm.
Cons
-
Food quality can be inconsistent, with complaints about lukewarm dishes and things like snotty eggs or tinned tomatoes that don't quite hit the mark.
-
Service isn't always reliable – some experiences involve staff who seem uninterested, forget orders, or take ages to serve.
-
Wait times for food can drag on, which might put a dampener on your visit, especially if you're popping in for a quick bite.
-
They occasionally run out of popular items, like fish, which can lead to frustration if you're set on something specific.

Popped in for a drink and something to eat. Settled on the breakfast. While it was ok I did receive a snotty egg and would much prefer menu to state if it's fresh or tinned tomatoes. If tinned tomatoes then the toast should arrive on a separate plate as it gets soaked from the tomato juice.
The atmosphere was quite dull. The place is very dusty. Couldn't believe how dusty it was. Mainly up a height around all the bulbs and shades and the big canopy around the door. Cleaner obviously needs a feather duster.
We had lunch there on Bank Holiday Monday. The staff were not great. The food wait time was really long and when it arrived it was luke warm. Not be be recommended.
When ordering drinks from the bar, the staff really couldn’t be bothered, not listening to the order, missing out drinks and asking for money before we’d finished ordering. It was not super busy but the food took forever to arrive. After reminding them, it was clear there had clearly been a mix up so it took another ten minutes making the wait time to over 40 minutes. When the food arrived it was luke warm and there were no condiments and there was one large saxa table salt which all diners had to share! The owners need to sort their staff and system out.
We visited The Priory on Saturday and unfortunately it wasn't a good experience. After placing our order we were informed they were out of fish, fair enough, so changed order. Found out later they had a delivery just as we were ordering but no one informed the front of house staff, and then no one offered to change our order.
Unfortunately I can't review the food we did order as it never arrived. 45 minutes after order (1 pizza, 1 sandwich w/chips and 1 scampi w/chips), no food had arrived. Went to ask the staff what was happening, had to wait several minutes for someone to come over. Was told food was being plated and it would be 5 minutes. 10 minutes later still no food, so went up to ask for a refund. The only reason I've given 1 star for Service is because the Supervisor was very apologetic and friendly, offered a full refund. Several other tables had also refunded and others will still waiting as we left.
Can't comment on the quality of the food so only scored on Service & Atmosphere.
We visited the priory with our boy in his stroller 😸.
It was initially a warm day but got cold rather quickly 🙄.
We had a few beverages here, the barman makes the best mai tai's we have ever tried 😁 and they're reasonably priced!
We went inside for a few whilst we warmed up, very friendly atmosphere and although on this occasion we didn't have dinner here.
The meals we did see that people were ordering looked good, so we are looking forward to our return for more mai tai's 😂 and of course to try the food.
Thank you for your marvellous hospitality 🥰 ...
Kindest regards
We wandered up and down Front Street, Tynemouth, on a miserably cold day. We looked in the door and the place looked warm and welcoming.
There were a few other customers, but at 5:30 on a cold Thursday evening it was welcoming to see other diners.
The menu was small but as it was titled 'Winter Warmers' it was what we wanted to see.
The staff were very friendly and our order was soon taken. Our food arrived in a reasonable time. We were not disappointed. I had dumplings, mince, chips and peas. The better half had scampi and chips. Portion sizes were pleasing. The cost was similar to other eateries we had looked at prior to choosing 'The Priory'.
All in all it was a teatime success.
