About This Pub
Ah, The Head of Steam in Tynemouth – it's one of those places that really hits the spot if you're a fan of a good pint and a relaxed outing. From what I've gathered, it's got this brilliant array of craft beers and real ales that you won't find everywhere, making it a go-to for anyone wanting to try something new without breaking the bank. The food's another highlight; those pies are proper comforting grub, and it's nice to see vegan options on the menu too, so it's inclusive for all. Plus, with live music and events going on, especially on weekends, it adds a bit of energy to the cosy setting – imagine sipping a cocktail while listening to a local singer, all just a stone's throw from the beach. That said, it's not all perfect; a couple of reviews pointed out that service can drag on, with waits for drinks or food that might frustrate you if you're nipping in for a quick stop. And occasionally, the staff don't seem as knowledgeable or engaged as you'd hope, which is a pity given the stellar beer list. Overall, though, with a strong 4.3 rating from heaps of positive feedback, I'd say it's worth a visit – just go in with realistic expectations and maybe plan for a leisurely afternoon rather than a speedy round.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of beers is absolutely brilliant – they've got a fantastic range of local craft brews and real ales, plus some from around the world, which is perfect if you're after something a bit special.
-
The food's a real treat, especially those Pieminister pies served with mash, peas, and gravy; they're hearty and delicious, and they've got vegan options too, so it's great for all sorts.
-
It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere with live music sessions mid-week and DJs on weekends, making it a fun spot to unwind and enjoy the vibe.
-
Being right near the beach and Tynemouth Priory, it's in a prime location for a post-walk pint, and it's dog-friendly, which is always a plus if you're out with your furry mate.
-
The overall rating's a solid 4.3, with most folks raving about the friendly service and reasonable prices, so you can expect a welcoming feel most of the time.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit slow at times, like waiting ages for a cuppa or your food, which might not suit if you're in a rush or have limited parking time nearby.
-
Some staff seem a tad disengaged or not too clued up on the drinks they're serving, which is a shame when you've got such a great selection on offer.
-
The opening times are flexible, but it might close earlier on some days, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning a late one.
-
A few recent reviews mentioned it not being too busy, which could mean a quieter night out, but on the flip side, it might lack that lively buzz if you're after a packed pub feel.

Had a lovely experience at head of steam, served by Rachael, very friendly, would definitely recommend. Especially the pies!
Atmosphere is pleasant, dog friendly! The bar was empty and it took 5 minutes to be served, 15 minutes wait for a cup of tea, 38 minutes and no sign of our food. It is a very slow service for somewhere that has car parks with 2 hour maximum stay. The staff look disengaged, and provided minimal customer service. When the food arrived it was good quality but nothing compared to redhouse in newcastle
Popped in for a beer while down Tynemouth
They had a singer on Sunday evening, he was devent, beer reasonably priced.
Cosy settings
It wasnt busy at all when we were there.
Clean, good atmosphere quite a selection of beers and cocktails right on the front street and the steak and ale 🥧 mash, gravy and peas are absolutely delicious, this is well worth a visit.
Some good world beers not found in other pubs. Staff not very knowledgable about what they are selling though. But nice place and some metal wall signs of the beers as in other branches.
