About This Pub

Ah, The Old Red Lion – it's one of those classic Sheffield pubs that really captures the essence of a good British night out, isn't it? From what I've gathered, it's got this inviting atmosphere that makes you feel like you're among mates, with its traditional architecture and a solid lineup of beers and wines to choose from. The food can be a proper treat when it's on form, like those homemade pies or a well-priced Sunday roast that leaves you satisfied without breaking the bank. And let's not forget the quiz nights; they're a brilliant way to spend an evening, full of laughs and friendly competition. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – I've heard tales of food not quite hitting the mark, with dry or underwhelming dishes that don't match the expectations, and service that can sometimes go awry, like mix-ups with drinks or bills that need sorting. Parking's another bugbear, with the odd argument over spaces adding to the chaos. Overall, it's a gem worth visiting for that authentic pub experience, but it'd be wise to keep expectations in check and maybe give it a ring ahead to avoid any surprises. What do you reckon – fancy giving it a go sometime?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming and welcoming, like stepping into a piece of British history where you can relax and chat with friends over a pint.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers and wines, from local brews like Farmers Blonde to options from further afield, catering to all tastes.
  • The food is spot on when it's good – think hearty homemade pies and traditional Sunday roasts that hit the spot, especially with those great value deals.
  • Quiz nights are a real highlight, adding to the fun and community feel with lively trivia sessions that bring people together.
  • Service can be lovely and friendly, with staff who make you feel right at home, as mentioned in some glowing reviews.
Cons
  • There have been a few mishaps with food orders, like dry gammon or items not quite as expected, which can leave you a bit disappointed.
  • Service isn't always spot on, with issues like wrong drinks arriving or billing errors that add unnecessary hassle.
  • Parking outside can be a right faff, with arguments and spots hard to come by, making it tricky to pop in for a quick visit.
  • Some experiences suggest the food quality varies, such as undercooked items or portions that don't live up to the hype.
  • It's a shame about the occasional lapses in attention from staff, like getting distracted mid-service, which might spoil the overall vibe.

We ordered the hog roast sandwich with gravy, and it stated ‘garnish’. We assumed this would come with meat, some kind of sauce and some trimming, maybe stuffing/ crackling as one would think a hog roast entails. However, we got dry gammon on a baguette which was not cooked (was still dough unfortunately so it did not get eaten)- absolutely no trimmings. The drink prices are quite expensive (over 6 pounds for a pint). The only thing we really enjoyed were the chips and gravy. Seemed quite extortionate for 33 pounds :/ We did complain and the chef was informed and the reply was ‘we use a different provider for bread’ - it was clear to see the bread was doughy and needed to be cooked. Please see picture as reference regards the bread 😅😅 Quite unfortunate as we love this country pub!

Where to begin. Once seated we were eventually asked about drinks. Drinks arrived and were wrong. We'd asked for a small orange juice and lemonade and a pint came. They rectified it but when the bill came it hadn't been changed; more of that later. When the waiter came to take the food order he was very brusque; no please, thank you, etc. 45 minutes later the same waiter came back and said "sorry, your order hasn't gone through, what was it?" We reordered. It was another 15mins before the food arrived. We were asked "do you want sauces?" The requested sauce packets were then collected and literally THROWN onto the table with the words "there you go". We were asked if we wanted more drinks and ordered two soft drinks. When delivered he said "these are on me". Bear in mind of course that these drinks were only necessary because of their service failure. The only upside to this whole debacle was the food was EXCELLENT. Sadly the whole experience was appalling. When the bill came they had not even considered the situation, had charged for 1pt of OJ and lemonade. I asked the waitress to consider the experience we had and adjust it accordingly. She said "you've had two drinks to compensate". That's two drinks we wouldn't have had anyway but had to because of the exceptionally poor service. We paid in full for just the food. The grumpy, brusque, bordering on rude, service really upset my 87 year old mum and as this was meant to be a treat for her we feel the service ruined it. An error in processing orders could have been forgiven if the staff were pleasant. They were not.

Was recommended to us when staying in the area and didn't disappoint. In fact we ate there on both days! Really friendly staff and nice surroundings. Particularly enjoyed the sea bass on fish Friday but all the food was tasty. Reasonable prices and some good offers on a varied menu. Would visit again.

Went for lunch today as there was a power cut in our area and was getting rather hungry 😅 fantastic food, service and what great value for money! My daughter had the fish and chips which was beautifully battered and we both had the gammon. Homemade chips too. Yum. 3 meals for £30. Brilliant. So nice that it's dog friendly too, my Betty definitely approved and enjoyed the other customers attention.

Well where do I start outside problems parking and people arguing about locals and such inside well wasn't too busy but we got a place to eat Both chose the Sunday roast one with Beef one with Turkey £15.99 and £1.50 extra for Cauliflower Cheese🙄 Fuming as the server brining or lunch decided to stop and play with a dog on the way to the bar to collect our food no hand washing between the 2 events 😡 g Good job we paid the extortionate £1.50 as the Lunch entails 2 thin slices of meat on the Beef and Turkey one slice plus Scraps trying to make 2 slices add onto the plate one Yorkshire pudding,1 Carrot, 1 Parsnip,1 thin Stem of brocoli,1 Roast potato ,1 Small Spoon of Mash Potato and Bit of Awful Red Cabbge and a slice of Stuffing and incoming 2 bowls with one Cauliflower Floret in each with cheese sauce on it Now had this being a Mitchelin Star Restaurant you'd probably expect little food and high prices But this is Yorkshire local pub (Zero on the Michelin score) In an area where Quality and Quantity and price point is much much better catered for in the local area I'm just struggling to see and compare to other places how one has the audacity to charge so much to feed customers so little in fact I'll add a photo of a place that is £4 less per head and much better Quality Service and environment This will as the local gents who were sat by us said be there own undoing greedy was the words used by them and I can only agree with them based on our experience today vast difference in food quality and quantity and prices a week apart less that 4 miles apart from each other Very Disappointed with the Old Red Lion Grenoside Sheffield
