About This Pub

Ah, The Old Hall – what a lovely little spot it is, tucked away in Heckmondwike. I have to say, it's got that classic pub charm that's hard to beat, with its historic building and a real sense of tradition from being a Samuel Smith's place. The staff are just brilliant, always making sure everything runs smoothly, whether it's for a casual drink or something more like hosting a wake – they've got a knack for making people feel looked after. And if you're after a proper chat without phones or distractions, the acoustics are spot on, making it ideal for catching up with mates. On the upside, it's great value in many ways, and if you're lucky enough to stay in one of the rooms, it's like stepping back in time with those beautiful touches. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – they've stopped doing food, which means you might have to pop elsewhere for a bite, and the drinks can sting a bit on the wallet, as I heard from someone who paid a fair whack for a couple. There were also a few moans about things not being as clean as they'd like, which is a shame for such a nice venue. All in all, if you're in the mood for a traditional pint and a natter, it's worth checking out, but keep those points in mind for a balanced night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a charming traditional Samuel Smith's pub with a wonderful historic building and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
  • The service is absolutely spot-on – friendly and attentive, perfect for special occasions like wakes or just a relaxed catch-up.
  • Great value overall, with a tech-free vibe that encourages proper chats and has lovely acoustics for enjoying conversations without any distractions.
  • If you're staying over, the rooms are a real treat, like that four-poster bed in a beautiful setting – it's got that extra touch of character.
Cons
  • They've stopped serving food, which is a bit of a letdown if you're hoping for a meal with your drinks.
  • Drinks can be on the pricey side, like that £14 for a whisky and gin – not ideal if you're watching your wallet.
  • There have been grumbles about things like unclean glasses, which isn't what you'd expect and could put a dampener on the experience.
  • It might not suit everyone if you're after a more modern spot, as it's very traditional and some bits feel a tad outdated now.

Alison, thank you so much for hosting my dad's wake. The food went down a treat and you really listened to our requirements/preferences. I highly recommend this lovely pub and lovely publicans.

Tech-free pub that no longer serves food, so unfortunately we couldn’t stay (came out for lunch). However, what a stunning building, beautiful atmosphere and amazing welcome/service. If I were looking for a place to drink and chat today, this would be where I would come. Really nice acoustics, audiologist approved for those who struggle to hear. If you know, you know :-) Delighted to have found it, will be back!

Super pricey people. £14 for a Double Whisky and a single Gin and Tonic. The glasses were not clean, and I had to ask for a second slice of lemon as the first one was See-through. This was not a cocktail. 20 years ago it was good. I'm done.

Wonderful place to stay. The room was perfect, and complete with a four poster bed. Historic building in beautiful grounds. Such a treat to stay here.
