About This Pub

Ah, The Old Griffin Head in Gildersome – it's one of those traditional pubs that really captures the heart of a good night out in Leeds, with its lively atmosphere, live sports, and a solid range of drinks that keep things affordable and enjoyable. I've heard from folks that it's brilliant for sinking a pint while watching the footy or rugby, and the added perks like being dog-friendly make it ideal for a casual meet-up after a walk. The staff can be absolute gems, creating that welcoming community feel, especially if you're into live music or a game of pool. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – some have had run-ins with rather brusque service from the owner, which can turn a pleasant evening sour and make the place feel a bit cliquey. Overall, if you're up for a proper local experience, it's worth a go, but maybe pop in with a group of friends to gauge the mood first, as it seems to shine brightest when things are buzzing just right.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff can be really friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, especially if you're popping in for a quick pint or to catch up with mates.
  • They've got a great selection of drinks with some unbeatable offers, perfect for enjoying a refreshing lager or trying out their hand-pulled ales like Wainwright and Landlord at keen prices.
  • It's a sociable spot with live music, live sports on HD screens, and even options for pool, which adds to the fun and community vibe.
  • Being child and dog friendly means it's versatile for family outings or walks, and they've got an accessible toilet, which is a thoughtful touch.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes be downright rude or non-existent, with reports of the landlord being hostile, which really puts a damper on the experience.
  • The atmosphere might feel unwelcoming or exclusive, like it's more for the locals, leading to some uncomfortable encounters for newcomers.
  • There are mentions of a depressing environment at times, which could spoil what should be a relaxing pub visit.

Disgusting service from landlord and pub owner. Customer service by them is non-existent. Extremely rude and terrible atmosphere. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! We had been attending this pub for over a year, only to be spoken to like trash after being slightly loud after a few drinks once (as tends to happen after a few drinks) will not be returning, terrible attitude by the landlord and owner.

30/12/24. Village locals a pub with more coming from the surrounding areas. Old building but one large room with separate spaces. Muted sports TV & pool area. Normally serves 2 handpulled ales (Wainwright & Landlord) at keen prices. Child & dog friendly. No food but a hot kebab type van is in the limited car park 2 or 3 evenings a week. Wheelchair access is good but no disabled facilities.

Great local pub. Very nice friendly staff. Been a few times to meet local friends and stopping on a dog walk over the footpath. Always had a nice time

Awful atmosphere at this public house. A depressing environment that feels like a local-exclusive place. Was met with hostility as soon as we walked through the door. I was at this pub with 4 of my friends (of which are all local) and after playing 8 games of pool the owner proceeded to cover the pool table with a wooden board as to dismiss us from the table. Participate in the pub quiz. Won. Was congratulated by the barmaid confiscated our prize due to reasons unknown (most likely our youthful easily-discriminating age). I’m led to believe this is due to the fact they we were not regulars: BORING.
