About This Pub
Oh, The Oddfellows Arms is one of those pubs that just hits the spot in Chelmsford – it's under new management and buzzing with a great vibe. From what folks are saying, the food's a real winner, with standout smoked BBQ options that leave you feeling chuffed and satisfied after a meal. It's brilliant for watching the match on the telly or nipping in for a quiet pint and bite with mates or family. The staff are dead accommodating, which makes the whole experience even better. That said, it's not flawless – I've come across a couple of mentions where certain dishes fell a bit short, like a burger that was on the dry side or some meat that could've been more tender. Still, with such high ratings overall, it's well worth a visit if you're after a solid pub outing, just keep expectations in check for the odd off day.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot-on, especially their smoked BBQ dishes like ribs and brisket – proper filling and full of flavour.
-
It's got a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with plenty of TV screens for catching the footy or sports, and cosy corners for a quiet meal or drink.
-
The staff are really helpful and friendly, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
Portions are generous, and the prices feel fair for the quality – no complaints about the pints either, always spot on.
Cons
-
A few dishes might not always live up to the hype, like some meats being a bit tough or lacking that extra punch of taste, based on what I've heard from others.

Great events, plenty of tv screens to watch football/sports games. And quite corners for having a meal or a drink.
The food here is amazing. Absolutely filling and delicious. Price is reflective of quality and I’ve not had a bad pint in there either. If you’re a fan of smokehouse food then you must give it a try!
I ordered the ribs and brisket combo meal and really enjoyed it. The brisket was tender and super tasty.
The other two meals were a little disappointing though. The beef short rib didn’t have much taste to it and should have been more tender.
The burnt-ends burger was tough and dry. I was expecting this to be juicy and saucy like Bodeans in London but it wasn’t.
I would 100% come back for the brisket and ribs but the other meats weren’t up to the prices we paid.
Our local so we could be considered biased. Used to pop in though before we were locals and loved the atmosphere and food. Since changing to the smokehouse it's got even better and the Christmas special of smoked turkey baguettes are the best Christmas Sandwich I've ever had.
Great independent pub serving a range of American style smoked BBQ cuisine. Nice relaxed atmosphere and very helpful and friendly staff. Large food portions. Definitely recommend a visit for food with family of friends, whether it’s during the week or at the weekend.
I’ve visited several times. I recommend anything from the smoker menu. (Pictured is the Brisket of Beef) The loaded fries are almost a meal in itself! The pie option if it is on the menu is a great Sunday afternoon choice too. (Seems at the time of this visit there’s a slight change in the menu since covid lockdown, but if you’re lucky it might be back)
