About This Pub

Ah, The King & Co – it's one of those hidden gems in Clapham that I've grown quite fond of chatting about with mates. Tucked away from the hustle, it's got this warm, eclectic charm that makes you feel right at home, whether you're nipping in for a quick pint or settling in for one of their brilliant pop-up food events. The drinks are a winner, especially with those £5 pints on offer during the week – it's such a treat to grab a London Pilsner or a crisp cider without breaking the bank. And the food? Well, it's mostly spot-on; Chef Zana's Jamaican and Antiguan influences shine through in dishes packed with passion and flavour, and the Indian or Japanese residencies have folks raving about tender curries and delicious karaage. They've got a knack for creating a relaxed environment too, with outdoor seating for sunny days and acoustic nights that add a nice touch of entertainment. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few stories of stale sides or overripe bits throwing off an otherwise great meal, and there was that one time someone mentioned tummy issues after a fabulous feast, which is never ideal. Service can be hit or miss; they're usually attentive and flexible, like when they catered to a family's needs, but sometimes they don't pop over to check if everything's alright, leaving you to flag it down. Overall, though, it's a solid spot for a good night out – just go in with an open mind, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is a real highlight with their rotating pop-up kitchens, offering everything from Jamaican-inspired dishes to Indian and Japanese specials – it's always fresh and full of flavour, like that amazing lamb keema or the tasty tacos.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of drinks at brilliant prices, such as £5 pints during happy hours, making it a wallet-friendly spot for a cheeky midweek catch-up.
  • The atmosphere is just lovely – a cosy, eclectic vibe with outdoor seating perfect for summer evenings, and they host fun events like acoustic nights and bottomless tacos on Sundays.
  • Service is generally spot-on; they're flexible and accommodating, especially for families, and the pub has a welcoming feel that makes you want to linger.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss, with some reviews mentioning stale chips, overripe avocados, or even burnt potatoes, which puts a bit of a dampener on things.
  • There have been a few tummy troubles reported after meals, so it might not always sit well, which is a shame after enjoying such tasty options.
  • Service isn't always consistent; sometimes they don't check in to see how you're getting on, leaving you to sort things out yourself if there's an issue.
  • It can get a tad unpredictable with the pop-up menus changing, so you might not always get what you're expecting on the day.

Good tacos, though chips were stale and avocados overripe which was a bit of a bummer. They were flexible with keeping the toppings on the side for our kiddo. We went early (around 5:30) and found outdoor seating easily.

Checked out their latest kitchen residency - Haveli specializing in Indian food. Loved everything but if I had to pick , the lamb keema pau and the curries are a must order. Both the chicken and the lamb in the curries were really tender and flavoursome. We also asked for a repeat order of parathas to mop all that lovely sauce! British pub and Indian food is always a perfect match! Also special mention to Sham who looked after us well!

Really like this pub but sadly was a fab roast except for the potatoes which were burnt, stale and old (see photo). They never came over to ask how everything was but to be fair to them we didn't go up and complain in person as I was feeling a little under the weather so just didn't have the energy to complain - they may have replaced with better had we complained.

Went to check out the Japanese pop-up in June. Absolutely amazing food - great portions and price. Had the chicken karaage, snow crab buns and miso potatoes. All absolutely delicious. Decent price. Not sure if something wrong with the kitchen or just me but I had tummy problems afterwards. However, drinks are crazy expensive. A double G&T was about £15. I didn’t ask for anything fancy, just a G&T. I was served what seems like the sponsored G&T. Shocking! Service was very friendly. However… they could have warned me that would be the price.

Nice little hidden gem this pub! Went there with a friend and had a really good time. It was a Wednesday evening so it wasn't busy at all, but the pub still had a really good vibe to it. The music was good, and the food was even better, with large portion sizes for the price. I believe the menu changes to a different cuisine every month or so? Neat idea! The staff are all super chill and pleasant to talk to as well. I recommend getting the Miso ice cream while it's still on the menu. It's worth it! Plenty of vegan options to choose from as well, even vegan beer which I didn't know was a thing until just now!
