About This Pub

Ah, the Jolly Steward – it's one of those hidden gems in South Shields that just warms your heart from the get-go. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff are absolute stars, always going out of their way to make you feel at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or planning a bigger do like a baby shower. The atmosphere is spot on too, with great music and a clean, inviting space that makes it perfect for a relaxed evening. And let's not forget the food; those Sunday roasts sound mouthwatering, and even on weekends without a kitchen, the food van steps in to keep things going. On the flip side, it's a bit of a letdown that they don't have a proper kitchen setup every day, and without clear operating hours or an online spot, it can feel a tad disorganised. Plus, it looks like the pub might be shut for now, which is a real pity because it seems like a top-notch spot for a casual catch-up. All in all, if you can catch it when it's open, it's well worth a visit for a good laugh and some decent grub, but do check ahead to avoid any disappointments.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates.
  • It's got a lively atmosphere with fab music and a spotlessly clean environment that really adds to the vibe.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced, so you won't break the bank on a night out.
  • Food options are a treat, especially the delicious Sunday roasts and the handy food van that lets you eat in on weekends.
  • It's brilliant for gatherings, like baby showers or casual get-togethers, as it handles groups well and serves up lovely buffets.
Cons
  • No kitchen on weekends means you're stuck with the food van, which isn't quite the same as a proper meal.
  • Operating hours aren't listed anywhere, so it can be a bit of a faff to plan a visit.
  • It seems the place might be closed at the moment, which is a right shame given the good times it's had.
  • There's no website or online presence, making it tricky to get the latest info or book ahead.

Used to be one of my two local pubs when I was living in the Marsden area and the other one was the Marsden Inn up overlooking the cliffs and the sea at the top end of Marsden Estate, great views and a great bunch of lads and lasses who I'm very happy to call my good friends

Had our daughters baby shower at this venue. It easily accommodated our 28 guests. Buffet was lovely and well presented. Also curry and rice and spare ribs for hot choice. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend here for a bit of a do!!! 😊
