About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about The House by Hilly Gant – it's one of those places that just warms your heart from the moment you walk in. The food is genuinely exceptional; we're talking dishes made with the freshest local produce that burst with flavour and look like they've been plucked straight from a foodie's dream. Whether it's a perfectly cooked steak or those delightful vegan choices, everything's crafted with real care and passion by the talented team. The staff are an absolute treat too, always chatting away and making sure you're looked after without being over the top. And the ambiance? It's like stepping into a cosy, stylish home – that converted house setting adds such a lovely touch, ideal for a romantic dinner or a family gathering. On the flip side, though, the hours can be a tad restrictive, with closures on Mondays and specific times that might not suit everyone's schedule, so it's worth double-checking before you head out. Plus, if you're not in the area, it could mean a bit of a drive, and I've heard whispers that it might not always be open, which is a shame. All in all, it's a fantastic spot for a memorable meal, but just keep those little niggles in mind to make the most of your visit – I'd say it's well worth it for a proper treat!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely top-notch – think beautifully presented dishes with fresh, local ingredients that make every bite a delight, like that incredible duck or the gammon roast that folks rave about.
  • The staff are wonderfully friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make you feel right at home, as if you're catching up with old mates over a meal.
  • It's set in a charming, converted house that's full of character, creating a cosy and stylish atmosphere that's perfect for a special night out or a relaxed Sunday lunch.
  • They've got a great selection for everyone, including plenty of vegan options, so it's easy to find something that suits your tastes without any fuss.
  • The prices feel spot on for the quality you're getting, making it a brilliant spot for treating yourself without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • The opening hours can be a bit tricky, with it closed on Mondays and limited evening slots on some days, so you'll need to plan ahead if you're keen to pop in.
  • It's tucked away in Braintree, which might mean a bit of a trek for those not local, though it's well worth the journey if you're up for it.
  • From what I've gathered, it might not always be operating at full tilt, as there are hints it could be closed temporarily, so checking in advance is a must to avoid disappointment.

First visit here (hopefully it won't be the last). My son had been before and really enjoyed the food. The menu was comprehensive, they even had a separate vegan page with plenty of delightful options. 😊 The Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our three courses were all served up with a pleasant chat and just the right amount of wait in-between the courses. All of our dishes were tasty and most enjoyable. The restaurant is really clean and smart, as are the staff. I would have liked more people in there to create an atmosphere. But what is, is what is. Maybe it was quiet as we were quite late in the afternoon. Overall, we all throughly enjoyed our meal. Thank you very much.

The best restaurant in Essex by far. Chateaubriand was cooked excellent and the peppercorn sauce was to die for! Can’t wait to go back and try everything on the menu 😄

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I can't recommend The House by Hilly Gant enough! Daisy provided exceptional service – 10/10. She was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make our visit perfect. The food was absolutely incredible – every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The building itself is stunning, with so much charm and character. You can tell every detail has been thoughtfully curated to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. This is truly a gem of a place, and I can’t wait to visit again. Thank you for such a memorable experience!

Drove 2 hours to get here from London and was not disappointed. Hands down probably the best duck I've ever had and would gladly have it again. My starter and dessert were equally as good as were the hand cut house chips with parmesan and truffle oil. The house itself (which is a grade 2 listed building) has a very interesting history and the atmosphere inside was very cozy. A delightful evening with fantastic food. Sam the head chef also came out to say hello which was a nice touch and the rest of the team were also very attentive. Many congratulations to Rob and Antoine on their new partnership, which I'm sure will be a success.

Visited The House by Hilly Gant for Sunday lunch and ordered the gammon roast. The presentation was excellent, and the food matched it in quality. The establishment is a chic, converted house – very stylish. For the quality of food, the prices were quite reasonable. The potatoes were the best I've had in ages – crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The portion size of the meat was generous. The only downside was the service being a bit slow, but it was a busy Sunday lunchtime. Overall, a fantastic experience. Highly recommended!
