About This Pub

You know, I had a great time at The Hospital Arms the other day, and it's one of those pubs that really captures the essence of a good British local. The beer selection is spot on, with that classic Adnams range that's poured just right and always tastes fresh – it's perfect if you're a fan of a quality ale. The staff are absolute gems, chatting away and making everyone feel welcome, which adds to the warm, relaxed vibe that's ideal for meeting up with friends or just unwinding after a long day. They've got some nice outdoor spots too, great for a bit of people-watching when the weather's on your side. On the downside, I did notice a few tables that were a tad sticky, which isn't the best first impression, and it seems like the food menu can be hit or miss, with things like pizzas not always on offer, which might leave you hankering for more options. All in all, with such a strong reputation, it's still a solid choice for a pint in Colchester, but maybe pop in with realistic expectations and you'll have a cracking visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is fantastic, especially the Adnams range – it's always well-served and hits the spot for a proper pint.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a lovely atmosphere, perfect for catching up with mates over a drink, with a cosy vibe that's hard to beat.
  • Outdoor seating areas are a nice touch, especially on a sunny day, giving you a spot to relax and watch the world go by.
  • Sunday roasts and cold beers get high praise, adding to that traditional pub charm that keeps folks coming back.
Cons
  • Some tables can be a bit sticky, which takes away from the overall experience and needs a bit more attention.
  • Food options like the flat stone pizzas aren't always available, which might leave you disappointed if you're after a bite.
  • Service can vary – one mention of an absent barman suggests it might not always be as attentive as you'd hope.

Beer selection is great. This is an Adnams pub which I love, but if you don't you shouldn't come. Beer is well served. But the table we sat at was properly sticky, as were others and the food advertised (flat stone pizzas) wasn't on offer. Just an absent look from the barman who said "They haven't shown me how to do that." Not the end of the world, but really disappointing. Again though, beer was really well served.

Went in to meet an old school friend who I had not seen for 20 years and for some qualIty real ale. It had been kept perfectly and was a great pint. We also had somewhere to sit and the atmosphere was friendly.

First time here, and I am very impressed. The bartender, Eden, was lovely and very helpful, and sat with my girlfriend chatting to her for ages such an asset to this pub. Will definitely return!

My local. Friendly staff. Great Sunday roasts. Cold beers. Several ales. Nice outside seating at the front and back where you can watch the world and people pass by.
