About This Pub
Ah, The Head of Steam in Birmingham – it's one of those places that really stands out in the city centre, just a short stroll from New Street Station, making it super handy for a quick pint or a full evening out. I have to say, what I love most is their fantastic array of drinks; whether you're into local craft brews or something from further afield, they've got it all, and the staff are dead chuffed to help you pick something new. The food's another highlight – those burgers and pizzas are proper tasty, and it's brilliant that they've got vegan choices too, so everyone's catered for. The shuffleboard and that cosy mezzanine add a fun twist for group gatherings, really making it feel like a go-to for laughs and good times. On the flip side, though, it can get a bit chaotic when it's packed, with service slowing down and the occasional queue confusion that leaves you twiddling your thumbs. Prices are a step up from your average pub, which might not suit if you're on a tight budget, and I've heard a few tales of tech issues like dodgy TV screens during events, which is a shame if you're there for the footie. All in all, it's a solid choice for a memorable night, but keep an eye on the crowds and maybe plan ahead to make the most of it – you'd probably enjoy it as much as I did, warts and all!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of drinks is absolutely brilliant – they've got an incredible range of craft beers, real ales from all over the world, cocktails, and even eco-friendly wines, perfect for a proper pint or something a bit fancy.
-
The food menu is spot on, with tasty options like pizzas, gyros, and their own branded burgers; plus, it's vegan-friendly, which is great if you're after something inclusive and delicious.
-
The staff are really welcoming and helpful – they'll even let you sample a beer before you commit, making it feel personal and fun for a night out with mates.
-
It's got a lively atmosphere with things like a shuffleboard area and a private mezzanine for groups, ideal for celebrations or just catching up after work.
Cons
-
Service can sometimes drag a bit, especially when it's busy, with the odd mix-up over who's next at the bar, which might leave you waiting longer than you'd like.
-
Prices are a tad on the steep side, so it might not be the best choice if you're watching your wallet, though you do get what you pay for in terms of quality.
-
There have been a few gripes with things like TV screens not working properly during big events, which could spoil the mood if you're there for the match.
-
Some dishes might surprise you with unexpected flavours, like a spicy kick in the burgers that isn't always mentioned, so it's worth asking if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

Been here multiple times and have always been impressed with the service and selection of drinks. It can get pricey, but you get what you pay for. You won't find this selection in many other places in the city centre. I'm glad they take 10 seconds to find the correct glass. I'm also glad they don't serve Guinness in a lager glass. Keep up the good work guys.
Maybe JRM blues should stick to wetherspoons
Headed into town for a few drinks, started here and felt like going home!
Slow to get served. Staff not knowing who was next in the queue so serving people stood BEHIND those at the bar. Due to pubs now serving drinks in labelled glasses I waited longer for my drink whilst the barman walked around the looking for a glass (people really don’t care what is written on the glass).
Left after one drink and had a much better day in much busier and less expensive bars!
I’m not sure how to reply to you Zac, but just a few points as this review has somehow made the local paper!!!
- It was a Sunday at around 2pm, yes it was busy but there was 2 people in front of me in the ‘queue’, 1 of those was already being served. 15 minutes for me to get served is way too long!
- I didn’t order a Guinness, I ordered a Camden Hells, so why use Guinness as an excuse. Also, 10 seconds to find the right glass for my drink is wrong!
To the reporter trawling Google Reviews for stories\clicks, oh how the Evening Mail has fallen from grace when you have to come here and copy and paste into your own website!
Food was cracking and served very quickly, but came to enjoy the Champions League Final and the TV screens next to us were black or loading for approximately half of the game which was infuriating.
Fantastic curated collection of beers! Very friendly staff. Samples no problem. Shame we’re not more often in Birmingham!
It's one of the best bars I have ever been to. Fantastic array of drinks, the staff even let you try a free sample before you pick your pint. Food is a fantastic quality and value for money. Grilled chicken burger does have some unexpected spice that might need to be put on the menu. But seriously, brilliant place to eat, drink and watch the footy. I've added it to my pub crawl list and will make sure I have time to visit this place when visiting Birmingham. I will 100% be back.
